  • Question : Some Vid Clips of A Wierd Humming Noise

OK well some background.. This is on my 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3100..
Brand New Rebuilt Engine And Transmission, New Wheel Bearings all around, Drilled and Slotted Rotors with Ceramic pads, New Tires, New tierods and balljoints....
Bumped tire size from 225/60/16 to 245/50/16

Well when i am going straight there is a wierd hum nosie.. can feel a little vibration in the floor pan.. but going on a slight right is gets louder but turning slightly left it gets real quite but not as loud as going straight.. here is 2 videos of the noise.. Oh it almost sounds like a Mud tire on a lifted truck.

Let me know what you think.. It has been happening for the past month but the car sits for at least 2 weeks..
    Robert

      Heres a link http://www.kellytires.com/kellytires...ea=Performance

When i get some time i will try to get the tire off and rub my hand over it to feel for any broken bands.. But i think your right thats what it could be..

        Too wide of tire rubbing?

Wheel bearings tightend down enough for proper preload?

Have checked for rubbing there is none of that going on..

I'm pretty sure that i have torqued them down to spec. But when i pull the wheel off i will check torque on them again.. I drove the car from 0-1,500 mileswith everything new from chicago to san antonio with no noises... But will check both when tire comes off..

Appreciate the HELP guys.. Thanks so far

Swap with the rear tires and see if the sound/feel follows.

if you have broken belts you'd have a shaking vibration. gererally, if the noise is louder when turning one direction and quieter turning the other direction, it's a bad wheel bearing on the side that's louder since it's take the load of the car. it is possible to have a defective new part.

if i turn hard to the left it makes noise just like when i turn right.. took off the wheel today and inspected the tire and doesnt look bad.. Unfortunaly i didnt have the correct size socket for the axle nut and couldnt check that but when i had the wheel on i checked for play on the wheel bearing and there wasnt any..

put the car in the air, start it up and through it in drive. with the wheels spinning, look at the tires. looking at a stationary tires tread won't tell you anything about that noise.

ahhh no not yet... I just let the car sit right now cuz i got my 3" system on my GTP so i drive the GTP a little more no since the exhaust...I actually swapped cars b/c i am going to put a tranny cooler on the GTP and change the fluid.. So here is something that is wierd.. I am driving the car no and the noise is LOUDER and more aggressive.. I am really thinking that its the wheel bearing...

Actually i lied i have checked torque on the cv nut and it it tight as can be.. i turned t a hair more to make sure it is tight..

haha, i can see what you mean. i meant you can't see if the tire is distorted by taking it off and looking at it. you need to see it in motion. a wheel bearing is a constant humming. slow speeds ie. 5-10 mph you won't hear much if anything. the faster you go the worse it gets. you have a whomp whomp sound which tells me a tire, especially in the vid.

ya, you still have the same tires on the car. sometimes it's hard to tell where the noise is coming from. hell, put the spare on and see what happens.
