  • Rear brake Stickage...

I have a 92 cav AND my gf has a 2000 Z24 and they both have the same problem with the rear brakes sticking after it rains. What causes this? Is it a cheap fix? I unhooked the ABS on my 92 so i had brakes but the 2000 is hers and she would be pissed if she didn't have abs. can you guys help me out? Thanks

its an inherent gm problem. my 86 had a recall for it, they replace the backing plates. mine had the updated backing plates and still did it. i finnaly fixed the problem when i swapped to daytona rear disks.

basicly all you can do is make sure the brakes is to make sure it stays clean and you use never seize were the shoes contact the backing plate, and keep them adjusted properly.

Ok so the only real way to get rid of this problem is to swap them out with discs? How much would it be to swap them out on average? How much modifcation will I have to do. I can do sum but not much.

Well on my 92 I have replaced to pads and the plunger on one side. They still stick. I had my dad (who is a ASE tech) help me on them and they still stick. I don't know what the deal is. Now the drums themselves I have not replaced for a while. Could that be it? Idk? Now my 2000 Z24 I haven't even thought about touching those yet. Her car has 218000 miles on it and I could not tell you when the last time they were replaced. Could that be the problem with hers? Will dust cause this? Should I try and clean her drums or should I just replace them and go from there?

How exactly do they stick? do they clunk when you let off the brakes after stopping? becaus emine do that too, kinda bad, but it's sort of intermittent, it doesn't do it all the time but when it does it's a pretty good clunk.... My rears were ALL new in Dec. 05, and the rear drums should last more than 2 years, wouldnt you think? i need to pull the drums and take a look-see.......

                Clunk?

I don't know if its a clunk but it sure as hell makes the back half of the car slam down. I have a pretty tight spring set up and it locks um up hard. It seems to do it more when it just rained or if there is alot of mosture in the air. And like i said I had to unplug my abs because it would lock up hard enough to make it so I wouldn't have any front brake power. It was almost a bad deal. I drive to fast to have no front brake power. I haven't had time to check them out yet but hopefully someone will read this forum and know exeactly what to do so i can just fix it and be done wit it.

My car did this when I replaced the rear shoes. When it gets humid or after a rain it gets a surface coating of rust on the shoes and it catches and grabs and the rear locks up. S10's can be bad like this, pulling out onto a road and going sideways!!

                  Drum brakes suck. Heheh.

But after my shoes finally are worn in some, they don't do this so much. Just a little squeak. A good hard brake will burn off the surface rust and you are fixed up.

Cleaning the dust out helps, but like I say the moisture will cause a rust film that is just thick enough to bite and catch hard until it's burned off.

yep, my 97 lumina, both 04 grand am's, and my 94 Z all do it. pretty grabby at first. replaced the shoes and drums in the 94Z and much better, but still does it some. go with wagner. put rotors on my lumina and grand am and really like how they work.
