  • Can a 3100 PCM be used to run a 3400 DOHC?

Title says it all. I have a 95 car with a 3100 and I want to swap in a 96 DOHC motor I just picked up. I *know* from the factory they run different PCM's, but do I *have* to? Would it be pretty straightforward to just adapt the harness to the motor? I really don't care about the OBD 1.5 and OBD2 issues (such as post cat O2's) so that's not my issue. Mainly the fuel injection, ignition, cam position, etc....

    Thanks!

    Will it run it? Probably...

Will it run it well? Most likely not...

You might be able to wire up a 96 DOHC computer with a little wiring added for the OBD2 stuff. I would not run a DOHC on a 95 3100 computer, unless you don't value your motor.

Hmmm......so you would suggest going to the 96 OBD2 setup from my 95 3.1 OBD 1.5? Just a bit more wiring? This is what I figure:

        Add MAF
        Add rear O2
        Add OBDII connector under dash

Move around wiring like you mentioned on your page (Alternator, coils, etc)

        That should do it, right?

Well, over the weekend I scored a complete 96 wiring harness off of a donor Monte Carlo at the boneyard. Sooooo sad to see this motor out there, but hey, more parts for me BTW, what could I get for a complete 96 upper/lower intake/throttle body? I'm thinking this will be the best place for me to get the wiring and such. I'm thinking about just wiring up the donor motor with this harness, and hopefully plugging it in and be good.

        Does anyone have a 96 set of wiring diagrams/pinouts for a 96 3400?

Now that I have both a set of 3400 and a DOHC 3400 donor motors to put in my car, I just need to decide which I want to do. After seeing what a PITA it is to change the alternator on that 3400 DOHC....yikes!
