  • 3400 intake manifold question

hello i recently bought a 1996 grand am with a 3100. i have been looking into a 3400/3100 hybrid swap, my plan is just to do intake manifolds now, due to i don't have very much money right now, and i really don't have the time. i have done alot of searching over the past few weeks and i only have one question now. when swapping a 3400 upper and lower intake manifolds on a 96 3100, which lower intake gasket do i use a 3100 or 3400.

i was thinking a 3400, but i just needed to be sure.

also i did get my hands on a upper, lower intake manifolds, t-stat housing, fuel injectors, fuel rails and FPR, MAP sensor, brakets for the MAP and the 2 for the alternator, EGR valve, and all the hardware, and vacuum lines off a 96 trans sport for $85, do you guys think i got a good deal?

from what i read i should just use my current fuel set up for the 3100, also i read that my fuel injectors are the same as pre 2000 3400 injectors. my plan is just to use the ones i have now(because i know they are good) and keep the others as a backup, and do the same with the sensors.

sorry i turned one question into a novel there

Personally I would wait till you had all the parts in hand that you wanted to install. Why tear into the engine and replace the intake manifolds when you are going to have to replace the intake manifold gaskets again when you decide to swap heads or do other work to the engine?

$85 doesn't seem too bad for what you got. Also if you were not aware the 3400 TB is a little bigger than the 3100.

    Good luck with your project

      Agreed...

But if you REALLY want to swap the intake now, use the 3100 gasket with the 3100 heads. It will becaome obvious why once youget into it.

cool thanks, i really don't want to go thru the PITA of doing heads now, seeing as the engine has just over 190K, i just plan on doing the intakes till the motor dies, and maybe a hole 3400 swap then.

i would find it more costly to go out and buy 3400 heads have them resurfaced, checked and cleaned and have a machine shop bill of like $200, buy all the gaskets and then i have my motor die on me a few months later.

ohh about the TB, someone beat me to it. i'm still searching for one. it's hard finding 3400 parts in the cheapo junk yards, i find myself looking at mini vans all the time now . i found a few yards that had some but they wanted like $40 for them

anyone have a write up or good thread that shows how to swap the shaft on the TB's, or is it pretty self explanatory?

I believe it was 3400swap.com that has a detailed explanation on swapping the linkages. In the swap guide itself.

why put the parts on one at a time? just keep them and build the engine whan you have all the parts, save time and money.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing the right way.

imo i'd source out some '00+ 3100 heads or 3400 heads and do the swap all at once, if ur interested in some 00 3100 heads i might have some i could part with pm me
