  • 3.4L engine change

I need some advise from some of you guys that know these engines well. I am looking for a 3.4L long block, VIN E, for a 98 Venture minivan. The dex cool ate the intake manifold gasket (sound familiar?) Intake gasket, revised version, was changed at 80k, engine spun a cam bearing and broke camshaft into at 122k so the block is not repairable. I am getting different compatability from different sources, My local GM dealer says I need to replace it with a 98 ONLY, according to his part#'s. According to another salvage yard, he says any 3.4L engine will work up thru the 04 model year. I know about the different cam sensors in 00 & 02 and have read in your forum that this is not an issue. My question is what years 3.4L engines (FWD) are interchangable with the 98 venture? Any help you can suggest would be appreciated.

    Welcome!

To answer your question, the salvage yard guy is right. There were a couple of changes between the years as far as sensors and such (EGR setup changed in 00, as did cam sensor, just to name a couple). But even with some of the changes, its still possible to run the engine no problem. If anything, you can always swap some of the parts off of the old engine and onto the new engine just to make sure everything works exactly as it would have before.

So basically, pick up any year 3400 (even the car ones will work), and start swapping. If you have any questions about anything, don't hesitate to ask us. We'll make sure to lead you in the right direction.

        Hi!

        Thanks.

Sould i take the 2.8 oil housing?

Can i take the 2.8 balancer and flexplate?

what is the thing with the water pump?

should i take it from the 2.8 or from the 3.4?

thanks a lot for your answers.
