  • Gen-I/Gen-II Same Block?

    Quick question - I have a Gen-I 2.8L long block that I have been using for mocking up my motor swap, but I'm actually going to use a Gen-II 3.1L from a Z24. Granted I haven't done all that much yet, but I've been going on the assumption that the blocks are externally interchangeable. Is that correct? I have not pulled the 3.1L yet as I like to have the donor car drivable until I'm actually ready to use the engine.

    Need to fab motor and trans mounts soon.

    No, the motor mount pads are different.

        Very different on the driver side (longitudinal reference) and quite different on the passenger side.

          My friend has made RWD mounts for a Gen II and they weren't too bad but definitely different compared to a Gen I.

            Could I make a motor plate that would fit a Gen-I FWD and RWD, and Gen-II? This is for a LeMons car, so if I need to get a replacement engine in a pinch, it would be nice to have my options open. I know 2/3 bolts line up between Gen-I FWD and RWD. Wondering if I can just pre-drill, slot or oval the holes to fit Gen-II as well.

            I think I'm best off sticking with Gen-I/II to keep the RWD steel oil pan for clearance issues. I can't box my subframe because of the transverse leaf fron suspension.

              He has a Trooper so his actually uses a FWD block like a Lumina APV van. Gen I and II mounts are the same in this respect.

                Yes, that was exactly my assumption. My Gen-I long-block is from a Trooper, and I was pretty certain they used normal FWD blocks. I have a 3.4L Gen-I RWD in my Trooper now so I know the differences between those two.
