I have an 02 malibu that just purchased that needs a new engine. I am wanting to know what is different with the 03 and newer engines cause it is telling me that they are not a match. What will I have to change to get this swap right.

I just finished swapping A 2003 3400 into my 99 Monte Carlo that had an older 3100 in it, the swap was easy with only minor differences, even between the generations and my stock computer is running it fine for now though i will get it flashed in the near future.just use all the accessories that go with the car and watch for sensor differences though there wont be many especially if both your motors come from a malibu.i would use the fuel injectors that go with the car to avoid problems. There shouldn't be too much of a difference between 02 and 03 depending on if both motors are air injected or not,(different heads). 2002 and 2003 come with either air injected or not..so make sure thats not an issue when picking your motor. All that said the 3100/3400 engines are pretty interchangable for atleast a decade from 1995 to 2005 that i know of..im in the salvage industry ive seen em all..

Another thing to watch out for, along with the air injection like honkbomb mentioned is the timing chain cover. There are 2 or 3 different ones for the 3x00, I believe. Also watch the cam position sensor wire, there are ones with a couple different lengths from what I noticed with a 3400 swap I did in an Achieva.
