The 3.1 from the 90 Lumina would be stepping backwards from the 3100 (I'm assuming here) in the Monte. Your best bet would be to track down another 3100, or if you want more pep, a 3400 to install in your car.
BTW, welcome to the site-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

It is illegal to install an older engine in a newer car, and in this case it will cause problems.
Like pocket rocket said, your best bet is to find another 3100 V6 or even a 3400 V6 to install. You'll likely find one with lower miles and in better condition than the old gen2 engines.

I forgot about that bit (since it is not an off road vehicle). Thanks Dave-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

thanks for the replies, guys. the engine currently in the monte is out of a 94-95 grand prix and is a 3.1 not a 3100. i didn't run into problems going back 1-2 yrs, i just figured 6 yrs was too far back for things to be the same. thanks and i will continue my search for an appropriate replacement engine. this is my wife's car so modification from stock (i.e. uprgrading to 3.4) is not an option right now.
btw,, can anyone tell me what yrs will fit this?? as near as i can tell 94-95 were the same and 96-00 were the same.,. but it has a 94-95 in it currently, not sure if 93 and older are a direct fit.Last edited by jeffreyallanglenn; 10-14-2009, 10:09 AM.

you most certainly did not pull a 3.1 from a 94-95GP...
as far as what is interchangeable: 93 was the first year for the 3100 and SHOULD work in a 95 vehicle. the 94-95 motors are directly interchangable, and the 96-99 will go in with a little work. the 2000-up would also require about the same amount of work that a 96-99 would...
