  • 97 Grand Am 3100-3400 swap

Ok, I'm new here..well a new "member" but I've been visiting this site for a few years now. I have owned multiple 60v6s from the 1st gens, the MPFIs and now the SFI (guessing 3rd gen) in my 97 grand am. I was driving it on cruise control, all of a sudden white smoke starts pouring out, and slowly slowed to a stop on the side of the highway. I'm guessing timing chain, the intake valves hung open and blew the lower intake manifold gaskets. Oil on both sides of motor under intake manifold, But for a while when starting it, ocassionaly you'd hear a "pop" from the intake. I figured timing chain was getting stretched, (188k original chain) so i was going to replace it.well it didn't last. I have oil in my intake tube/tb and it won't start at all. cranks, gets fuel, just won't run. Backfires out of intake and exhaust. So am i right to assume a timing chain? I was looking at the prices of timing chains (a comp cam or cloyes chain is around $50-60 on ebay) and then head gasket set (felpro of course) is like $170. Well, for about $100 more i could have a newer low mileage engine. What year motors will fit. I saw something about the GEN 3 blocks (up to 99). Did the block have external changes in 00'? I am looking for a direct bolt in motor, if i have to change some sensors around no big deal, but I need it to bolt in and wire up/run without swapping harnesses and ecms and custom mounts etc. I know the 2.8/3.1 MPFI could swap over directly, and that you can mount 3x00 intakes onto a 2.8/3.1 MPFI by extending wires to the coils and mounting them ontop and using a bracket for the cables off the old iron dukes for tv/throttle. And I know you can plop 3400 camaro intakes on them too, but I need to get my car running again ASAP, it's my only car, the family car (2 kids) and i live 30miles from work! So
Can i fit a 3400 from a 04 Grand Am into mine or should i stick to 94-99 blocks?

Thanks for all help, sorry for the long post..
