  • swapping a lq1 into a 90 3.1 lumina euro coupe

after some thought & discussion i decided if its not going to be a hugely custom setup, that i will put the 94 lq1 i have in the garage into my 90 lumina auto. i intend to use the stock ecm & use the tgp code to boost it once i have a more durable trans attached to it.

i need to know a few things though.

will the 94 GTP engine mounts work with little modification, will the stock lumina motor mounts work with little modification, or will i have to weld up some?

also what am i going to have to change on the engine to make it work with the tgp code/3.1's wiring harness?

and will the stock 4 speed auto trans be able to handle the additional 100 hp addition (its not getting boost until it gets a manual trans, but its getting a tune & headers/a bigger TB)?

i can help with that one... but 94 would be a MAF motor, with no MAP sensor from the factory, right?

if you don't beat on it, it will live for a little while... LQ1s never came from the factory hooked up to a 4t60/440t4, but it should be enough to last until you can find/get ready to install a 5 speed. alternatively, you could grab the 4t60-HD that came in the TGPs, those handle a LQ1 just fine...

actually its hooked up to an auto trans right now, but i dont want auto trans. im gonna get the motor in the car & drive it until i find a 6 speed (screw it, ive been finding them for 250-400 pretty commonly & 6 speed is just BA). i figure what the hell, breaking this tranny could be fun once i have the new one ready to go in

you CAN get them brand new for $250 through car-part.com

at least they were about 4 months ago when i was looking for them...

just don't beat on it too badly until you're ready to do the swap...

gpchris has a LQ1/F40 in a 95(?) grand prix, running OBD2? it will be easier with the stock ECM, since about the extent of tuning required to get a manual tranny functional is a single flag...

Whoa!!! HELLO!! Where do you live that you can find a 6spd transaxle for 400? I have been looking for a month around here for any kind of manual gearbox to put in my 94GP, and all I can find is slushboxes! NO 5spd, and no one has ever heard of the 6 yet! I guess that is what happens in Montana. So where are the 6spds, and how much would it cost to ship one to Montucky?

put in some requests for auto parts & out of the 400 offers sent to me there were tons of them for 300-450.

also shipping is probably gonna run like 150-250 bucks, no less than 100 & shouldnt be any more than 250. honestly if you put in a request with ineedapart & getusedparts, you should be able to find one for 300-400 no problem within 2 weeks that you can drive to & pick up. i take it as people wreck these damn G6 GTP's a LOT!!

also if you're looking for a 5 speed im sure you are doing it in the wrong spot. get out there & start looking for 91-94 pontiac sunbirds with 3.1 & 5 speed, you can find them in crap shape or with blown headgaskets for 200-300 bucks EASY- & voila! 5 speed. also once you are done you can part the car or sell it & cover at LEAST half of what it cost to get the car-so if you do it right you could do a 5 speed swap for $50-100 depending on how bad people need sunbird/cavalier parts/chasis in your area.
