  • 93 Olds 3100 upgrade

New guy here. (This might even be post #1)! LOL

I've been doing a lot of reading here on 3100's and upgrades to them. I've got a 93 Olds convertible, sole owner, Florida car and have decided to keep it instead of buying new.

It's a 3100 with 200k on it. I want to redo the engine, but am wide open to how! I was thinking mainly along the lines of rebuilding the 3100, maybe a cam and upgrade the top end, heads and intake to a 3400. (Reading here that seems to be a popular upgrade).

I can keep "searching" but hoped someone might chime in and short cut me to a proper thread or two, or perhaps point me to someone I could discuss this with in more detail.

Great forum. My other cars are Fieros.

Just grab a low mileage 3400... easier than a rebuild and probably cheaper. Then put a cam in that, maybe 3500 heads on it. (3500 heads are too big of combustion chamber for 3100 bore).

Any particular cars or years I should be looking at. Will that bolt to the existing tranny or do I need the whole drive train?

It will bolt right up to the trans. Motor mounts/etc should be non-issue if you really do have a 3100 in there it's pretty much remove and replace aside from a few minor things which if you search has been covered a million times. Re-use your injectors and FPR and rail, might have to go to a 3 wire CTS, thread the LIM for the coolant pipe or adapt the new style to your old. EGR adapter needed.

Does your car have the MAF or not? What trans is in that 93? 4T60-E ?? I wonder if your ECM could be a "downgrade" for 94-95 cars as a way to tune the engine..... much like people do to go to OBDII to tune. (94-95 was a grey year)

2000+ 3400's had better upper intakes. And will have less miles.

Thanks for the additional inputs. It gives me a better direction to "search".

Don't know (yet) about the MAF, but I've been suspicious about the ECM since I had some problems pulling codes. (I've read about that 94-95 change year for the Olds).

I'm going to look seriously at the 3400 swap. I feel that was really good advice. This will primarily be my wife's car, but if I'm going to all the trouble of the swap, decided a little "oomph" in the old girl wouldn't hurt!

I'll post what I finally decide (or more questions).

          Thanks again for the inputs.

thats the PCM for a 93 with 3100. as far as i know, nobodys done a definition for it. i thought about it a while ago and searched for info, but didn't come up with anything
