  • Swap...Kind of successful.

    Well... heres the story.
Some of you might have read my earlier post of how i rebuilt a 3.1 in a 1995 grand prix, and about a month later my girlfriend totaled the car...SWEET!! I found a donor car, a 1994 Buick Century 88,000 mi 3.1L BLOWN $250. Not bad. Well last weekend I did the transplant and the engine runs fine after a upper intake swap and some motor mount swaps and connectors. Now the problem I am having is with the transmission. I dont know whether or not that my problem is a sensor difference, which i dont think that it should be. The problem is I have no 1st or 4th/OD. My selector looks like this PNRD321. When the car is put into drive/OD the car will start in 3rd and not shift up or down. (Oh yeah forgot to mention that the car was sitting for 2 years prior to swap). Now when you put the selector into 3 it will start in 3rd and not shift up or down. Next, 2 position, I get 2nd gear only and nothing else. Position 1 , you get second gear and no other gears. Reverse works fine and the engine runs strong and I am very happy with the car but the tranny is going to drive me nuts. The tranny in the grand prix was good but had about 180,000 thousand miles on it. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Try cleaning the round plug on the front side of the trans. It sounds like its in default mode. Do you have a check engine light on?

yes, check engine and the Low Traction light both in a flickering state. Clean the plug on the side just above the modulator valve?

        That's where I would start.

cleaned the plugs, all looked good. After doing some more reading i do think that it is in default mode. Is it possible that I would have to use a relearn procedure or something of that nature?

I figured it out!!! I got a wiring diagram from a local tranny shop and tested all the wires and found my problem. The red wire from the altenator, not the one to the battery, had gotten pinched and cut some how during the install. I replaced the wire, and bada bing, runs and drives like a champ. Thanks for the input guys.
