  • 3.1L Turbo Build

I'm thinking of building up a Turbo 3.1 (non McLaren) and swapping it into my Lumina, currently equipped with a "VIN T" 3.1.

Now, of all the other swaps I could do the reason I'm thinking of starting with this is because I think it would be the easiest and fastest as far as "car off the road" time. I could basically build up everything on a stand, and since this is my first ever engine swap / rebuild / first time ever cracking open a valve cover, I could take my time. I know the 3.1 and it's wiring best, meaning it would require the least wiring and other modification on the chassis side.

I'm lookin' for any input / reasons to shoot this idea down. I'd probably build up a 4T60 vacuum transmission at the same time. I just don't have the time or resources at the moment to do a complete 5 speed / L67 swap. But, if this goes smoothly, then the amount I'll learn will be very useful should I want to do one in the future.

Make sure you get some decent axles while you're at it. Seems like the stock ones aren't the greatest, at least from my observations. One of mine seems to be making a horrible buzzing grinding noise if I accelerate any more than a crawl, which is probably because I raced it a few times.
