Is the 3.1 in the lumina apv's the same 3.1 block used in the rwd's?
Like in the camaro's, and the 3.1 used in the 90-91 Isuzu Rodeo. I have been visually comparing the Isuzu and the Lumina, and they look very similar except for the intake manifolds.

    Thanks

they are not the same. the fwd block has different mounting lugs cast into the block than a rwd. aside from that, it is the same as an isuzu motor. both the fwd apv motor and isuzu rwd motor differ from any other rwd motor in terms of the starter, the isuzu has it on the drivers side, all other rwd have it on the passenger side.

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping they were the same. A lot easier to find a 3.1 for an APV than for an Isuzu. Guess I will have to start looking for a rwd 3.4

I'm not doubting what anyone here has said, but does anyone know for a fact that the Izuzu's didn't use the fwd mounting lugs? It would make sense to me that a block was used that was already available from the parts bin, rather than a block dedicated to the Izuzu.

It used RWD mounts. An Isuzu block is in fact a RWD block except it was machined for a left hand starter simply because it was not used with a T5 or 700R4 transmission but was used with the 4L30E which must have been a left hand starter transmission because it was primarily used for cars like BMW's

there are actualy a couple different versions of the 4l30e, bmw, isuzu and cadillac. they all use different bellhousings. it was used with a variety of bmw motors, isuzu used it with several motors, and caddilac used it with the 3.0l in the catera. id actualy guess that the left side starter is for clearance around the front diff.
