  • 3.1multiport needs a rear wheel drive tranny swap? any out there?

I am thinking of swaping my multi port 3.1 out of a junk grand prix of mine into a suzuki samurai rock crawler. I have a automatic overdrive tranny from a 2.8 chevy s-10. Also have a 5spd out of a 4.3 s-10. does anyone know if either of these trannys will bolt up to the 3.1 before i attempt this project?

the 2.8l tranny will bolt right up. infact, any tranny that has the small gm bolt pattern will. this includes trannys from behind
    -1.8/2.0/2.2l ohv
    -2.8/3.1/3.4l
    -3100/3400/3500/3900
    -3.0/3300/3800

thhe 4.3l does not have a small gm patter, it has a large chevy pattern used on all chevy small and big blocks.

depending on what tranny you have from the s10, you may be able to get a different bellhousing for it. if it is a t5, a 2.8l s10 bellhousing may bolt right to it.

These statements are somewhat true, but you need to be careful. While it is true that many 3.1 liter engines will bolt to the 2.8's 700R4, you have to make sure to get your engine out of a Camaro, Firebird, Isuzu truck, S10, Blazer or similar RWD application because the starter goes on the other side of the block in these applications. Other than that, go to town! I have seen a few nice swaps using CamaroBird injected swaps.

Also, the RWD Chevy bellhousing 5 speed you have may not be a T5 if it came out of an S10, and whether it is or not, it not only bolts to SBC and BBC but also the 194-292 Chevy straight 6 and the old-style Iron Duke from the 60s on up through the early 80s, and the OMC 3.0 and 2.5 I-4s used in 14-20' inboard stern drives.

not all of them are. we just went through this at work with a 92 4.3l s10 4x4. for 91-94, you can have a getrag 290, nv1500, and nv3500. essentialy, they are the same tranny and all look the same, but there are a few internal differences. also, late 80s s10 with 4.3l can have a t5.

The NV 1500 was only for 4 cylinders. The Getrag I have never herd about. Also there was no 5 speed avalible for 88 to 89. From what I have gathered from the forums anyway
