  • OBDII conversion in progress.

I gave up on the OBDI idea and decided to just gut a 96 beretta for the engine harness and ECM and other misc stuff needed.

So does anyone have a OBDII swapped beretta running at this time?

I know Erich had his DGGM running on OBDII but its not running anymore due to engine fire, but I wasn't sure if there were any other successfull swaps out there?

Although you'll be able to tune with the DHP, by using a 96 PCM you will be limited with what you can do. If you can find a later PCM (98 I think?), you'll have more options.

I am always hearing that the 97 grand prix is the one to get as it has the most code available for that ECM. Truth or not, beats me.

I'm still toying with the idea of doing this if I keep my car for more than another year. The ECM from a 97-98 grand am should work for your application too. Same engine and transmission.

instead of creating 2 topics on the same thing ill post here seen as how we are working together on this swap with both our cars.

im doing the same as 3400-95-modified as far as going obd-II. so with the 98 grand am pcm is there any problem with getting it running. i mean as soon as i get the harness in there it should be plug and play right.

Ok, If this helps, I have a Wiring harness and PCM from a 99 Chevy Lumina 3100 car. I will sell complete, I was going to use it on my 94 Grand Prix project but I sold the car, and and now building a 99 Grand Prix with a 3100.

PM if interested in buying it.

Ben, I have heard the 97 and 03 Grand PRix PCM's were the "bastard" PCM's of the 97-03 Grand Prixs. I could be wrong though.

I'm also curious on this using a newer PCM... How can you do that? Does it still retain the same pinouts as far as engine harness wise, I'll be using a 96 engine harness on this.

I would think using a newer harness would be easier, Then all you would have to do is change a few pins at the fire wall, if any at all.

I thought a newer harness would be worse... for one a beretta doesnt share the same body harness plug as a grand prix, or even a grand am... then on top of that a beretta doesnt have a body control module so there would be the security issues to deal with... I think I'm best sticking with my 96 harness, ECM on the other hand I'm still curious on if you could use a new one on a older harness and if its the program that determines the pin outs.

the '98+ PCM has completely different pinout locations. HOWEVER '96-97 are completely interchangeable as far as my car goes. 16211539 IIRC for '96 and 16217058 for '97. So if you have #16211539 for a '96 Beretta then you're ok. The '97 has double the memory (512kb) you can modify a lot more, and has provisions for performance shift (separate set of shift points, etc) In fact the performance shift tables might be the only difference between the two (there's a lot of tables for just the tranny).

Also just so you know (if not mentioned) the knock sensor, trans gear switch/safety switch, and ECM coolant temperature sensor were different for '96+ and I had to change those. Technically the trans gear switch functions the same, and I did wire it in and use it briefly, but the plugs are different.

Oh I know all the differences dont worry
ABS, Knock, Trans Switch, Purge equipment, aready running 3 pin coolant sensor.
When I gutted the 96, I grabbed everything that looked different... I'm glad I looked at the purge stuff and also at the trans switch
I already have all of that covered... I just need to run some power wires for the ECM on my interior harness.

actually I noticed the extra purge equipment but didn't grab it nor install anything. The PCM has not cared. I think it's only there for manual testing purposes so I've read.

Purge stuff wont throw a code anyways, I had mine hooked up wrong and it didnt care really. Either way I grabbed everything since I wont have the DHP to tune it right away... It will have to run on a stock tune for a while and work right.

BTW whats your regrind specs if you dont mind me asking
