  • Engine swap, ECU from Auto to Manual

I am installing a 3.4L SFI engine from an automatic transmission equiped Firebird into a manual equiped Trooper. I'm concerned about the ECU - do I need to mail it off somewhere to get reprogrammed, is it something I can do myself, or something I don't need to worry about?

I still need the transmission functions deleted from my ECU. Any advice in this regard would be appreciated. What equipment do I need to edit the ECU myself? I know a place that will do it for $170, would anyone with the equipment here be willing to do it for less?

i dont think many people here know much about the isuzu ecm.
what are the numbers on it, and on the prom ?
helps if you give full info about it.
      obd1 ?

i think if you can find the software for it you need to go in and see if there are any flags that look like...

      manual vehicle option flag
then you jsut set it to true by making sure its ticked with a check, or true or whatever

      or manual shift logic...

It's not an Isuzu ECU, the engine and ECU came from a 1994 Firebird.

I think you'd probally just have to ground out the neutral safety switch, and you'd probally be good to go. That or just get a 5 speed ECM and make the wiring harness changes that would be needed.

I have a 5-speed ECM ordered, but I might try that grounding trick too - as I have another engine I may want to use the auto-ECM on.

Did you find a fix to your ECM problem?

What symptoms did it give you?
I have a friend to made a switch from an auto to a manual and the engine runs fine until you shift in gear.

I never did finish the project. It's a long story... I'm back to working on it again though. I ended up buying an ECU from a manual transmission equipped vehicle, and I was just going to strip the extra wiring from the harness.
