I guess this is a a question for Ben, i want to buy the $85 programmer from moates, but there is none in stock until the end of may, is there anywhere else i can buy one, in my 93 grand am with a 3300 v6 i just put a getrag 282 in it in the weekend and now it wont idle, because the 3300 learns its idle every time you start the vehicle and put it in drive, well i guess it is a little hard for it to do that, so i need to modify the programming to tell it that there is no automatic in it anymore and to raise the idle from 500 rpm to 1000rpm but i need to do it quick becuase the car dies at every stop, help please, thanks

You can get the willem programmer from ebay for 50 but its a major pain in the ass to figure out. I couldn't tell you how to set it up but it does work once you figure out the dip switches and jumpers. I don't use either, as I have an old xtronics POS that stopped working with 27C chips a long time ago. 29C still work, but I don't recommened their programmer cause its 150 bucks, software updates for 1 year or you gotta pay more (screw that, the old program works).

you can buy the Willems direct from www.mcumall.com brand new for like $52cdn. ( http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/stor...idProduct=3081 )

It includes all the software you need to get going and they have them in stock and they are very quick at shipping. The software; once you select what kinda chip you are burning it graphically shows the programmer and where all the jumpers & DIP switches need to be.

BTW: This is the programmer I use to do my 27C256 & 29C256 chips, and it works perfectly.

ok i was checking out that programmer, looks pretty good but can i read the stock chip out of the car? if so, how do i do it? so i can read the stock program and then modify it, also is it hard to modify the original program, i just want to raise the idle and take out the crap about the auto tranny, and maybe give it a little more power if possible, but i just dont see how you would read the original chip if the programmer takes the atmel chips, and the original proms aare a big chip, thanks for the info, i need to get this going quick the car keeps stalling at all the stops.

atmel is just the brand. 27C256 iis the stock chip. This chip is soldered into the memcal. if you have an adapter is really easy to read your stock chip. Youll need to replace your stock chip with a rewritable one (unless you have a UV eraser)

because you cant just pop the stock chip out of the memcal.... The chip is soldered in. so inless you have 28 soldering irons and 28 hands to heat every pin and pull the chip out (make that 29 hands), your pretty much commited to having to cut the pins and de-solder / remove each pin one at a time. Then the chip wont have any legs left on it and you cant put it into the programmer.

Its easier to have the adapter, so you can put the memcal onto the adapter, then onto the programmer. Like this:

i know ill have to get some stuff from moates but if someone would please point out what and where to buy for everything in that list of stuff, that would be greatly appreciated thanks for the help.

All hope is not lost for removing the chip without cutting the pins, Radio Shack should have a soldering iron available with a bulb built on to it to suck up the solder as it is melted, I have one that I purchased years ago pretty cheap but never really had to use it. Then you can solder in a zif socket I think it's called to make chip removal easier if there is room for it in the ECM case.

Ive used these soldering irons before... although they do a decent job at getting most of the solder sucked up, they still tend to leave a little bt and its enough to make for a frustrating time. For the price of a ZIF socket & iron, just solder the chip into the memcal and use the adapter board. Then you dont have to worry about bending a pin on the chip by constantly removing & installing the chip. Also u can use the board for raeding stock chips. I know the odds of that happening are pretty slim, but the odds are nil with the adapter board.

BTW: Atmel has discontinued this chip, and Ive noticed that every time I order from MCUMall the price has gone up so I suspect their supply is thinning out. You might wanna stock up.
