  • For Sale : LX9 Swapped 1991 Grand Prix GTP 5 Speed Getrag 284

Time has come for me to move on. Believe it or not the Grand Prix was my first car, I’ve had it for almost 14 years now! I’m looking to get a new car and the Grand Prix is on the chopping block. $1,150 and open to offers (cash only) – car is located in CT.

    1991 Grand Prix GTP
    5 speed manual, Getrag 284

    The good:
    -3.5L LX9 swap (3400 exhaust manifolds, 65mm TB)
-Original Getrag 284 car. I replaced the original Getrag with one from a 92 Lumina. Shifts smooth. Clutch replaced during swap.
-runs and drives and the LX9 has never left me walking
    -new alternator, waterpump, ps pump
-245/50/16 tires with 90% tread remaining
-regularly gets between 18-20mpg from mostly city driving
    -working Heads Up Display
-working sunroof, power windows, seats, locks and keyless entry
-rear brakes converted to 1994 style with working parking brake
-car has 125k miles. LX9 has 55k miles.
-I’ll include the Factory Service Manuals for the car and any 60v6 extras that I have

    The bad:
-tune is 90% done, needs wideband tuning for WOT
-exhaust is ‘Frankensteined’ together from what I had laying around
-it isn’t loud, has 2 cats inline, and doesn’t look bad
-will bump the underside of the car if jostled (like when you go over speed bump)
-paint looks great all around but rear pass side bumper has spider web from a fender bender years ago
-Pleather on driver seat is a bit worn has some cracks
-accessory belt chirps for about 2-3 minutes after a cold start
    -A/C doesn’t work, I believe it needs a charge
-cruise control is not hooked up

Pics upon request. Ask any questions.

What is the deal with the tuning issues at WOT? Does it stumble, ping, knock, bogg? How much of an improvement is the 3500 over what it originally had?

both the 3.4 DOHC and the 3500 should have around the same performance, but the 3500 is easier to work on and should be a little more reliable

The advantage of the 3500 are many, and here are just a few:
For one, it is far newer with much lower miles
Bulletproof reliability, steel crank, replaced LIM gaskets (no longer the OEM plastic)
                Similar performance
                Far more reliable
No timing belt to deal with ever
                Much easier to work on

The trans is out of a 92 lumina, and has roughly 90k miles. It is a Getrag 284 and has no shifting issues, shifts perfect. Clutch and release bearing are new with the swap.
I have a spare Getrag 284 trans mount (hard to find) that will go with the swap. You can even have the old original Getrag 284 that I pulled out of car if you want it. It works, just had a tough time into 2nd gear when the trans was cold.

I'm replacing the front wheel bearings right now since the current ones started to howel and I didn't want to sell like that. It can probably use a new seprentine belt and the dog bone mounts (cheap) should probably be replaced or rebushed - I may in fact have extras that will go with the sale.

The issue with the tuning at WOT is that above 5500 rpm it was running into some knock retard. The tuner suggested a wide band o2 sensor so that he could pin the fueling down. The car runs excellent as is, around town it runs great, gets good fuel mileage and has never given me problems. If you intend to race this car around then I'd do as the tuner suggests and get a wideband on there, complete the tune, then sell the wideband. I never 'raced' it, I simply used it to go to/from work. Its a 21 year old car, its not perfect and needs some TLC. I another car and a truck as well as my fiance's car all parked at my place and that is the big factor for us - we don't have the space for it and being our oldest car it made the most sense to get rid of.

Received a PM about where the battery is....

It is located in the trunk. I used 00 gauge Locomotive wire (huge (and expensive) but very flexible and oil/water resistant) and copper brackets to secure it to the underside of the car - there is no measurable voltage drop due to the battery being back there. The cable is so large that it required hydraulic shears to cut and a hydraulic crimper to attach the lugs. I ran power AND ground wires (it grounds on a trasmission bolt). Many people who relocated batteries to the trunk ground in the trunk, this leads to starting/charging issues. Since I ran a ground cable direct from the battery to a large lug on the transmission I've had no issues. Optima Red Top - no starting or charing issues. Been back there for years.

Hi, sorry for the delay in my response. The underside of the car is pretty clean. It has some light surface rust on suspension, no chunky rust or flaking. Underneath it looks more like a 5-10 year old car. The body has no rust. The car was not winter driven and parked in a garage which is the reason it has faired so well.

I had an interested buyer but they are no longer responding to my emails. Last chance here before I list it locally.
Car is pretty solid and the LX9/5spd combo hasn't ever let me down. Idles smooth and drives torquey.

Car needs some TLC but the low price reflects that.
-needs clutch pedal switch, doesn't effect driving but occassionally trips code 39 (faulty clutch pedal switch)
-tune should be completed for WOT using a wideband
-egr tube, might have one that I'd include with sale
                      -a/c needs charge and/or conversion to r134

                      Recently replaced/new:
                      -engine (3.5L LX9)
-transmission (replaced with a spare getrag 284 that shifts perfectly)
                      -clutch
                      -front wheel bearings
                      -catalytic converter
                      -tires are almost brand new
                      -tie rods
                      -steering rack
                      -alternator
                      -water pump
                      -clutch
                      -brake hoses
                      -brake pads

John... not that I want you to but you can always change your mind. At least until the shipping company assigns it to a driver, then there is a cancellation fee. I think it's a great looking car and am looking forward to owning it.

Nah, I won't change my mind. It was my first car and I have had it for a very long time and grown attached to it but the reality for me was that I don't have the space for 4 cars at my house and the Grand Prix was the logical choice to let go. I'm at ease that its going to you and I know you'll give it the TLC that a car of this age demands.
