  • Question : adding supercharger

hello all...it's been a while since i have been on here....i recently bought a 98 grand prix gt for 225 bucks...the car is complete and NOW working....i still have work to do tho...it has the 3800 and the intake problem that goes with it....anyhow now to my question's...1. since it's a gt NON SUPERCHARGED...2. can i add a sc to it?...if yes..what all would i need to do to make it work?...3. would i need to reprogram the computer?...4. do i need to add anything under the hood?...and most of all...5. would it be worth the time and trouble to do it all in respect to horsepower gains?...thanx for any advice

i belive u need s/c heads , intake and the blower it self. i think the s/c will bolt up to the n/a heads but they wont perform well. pease dont quote me on any of this. but i belive thats wat i was told.

You basically need from the heads on up and a ECM tuned for the SC (possibly even the ECM itself).

And would it be worth it? No. Its a 3800... nothing is worth it on them. Swap in a 60V6 and then maybe we'll talk...

and from my understanding theres a big difference in strength between the 3800 and 3800 sc bottom ends of that period.

if you want some real power pull the engine/trans & trade it to someone for a 3400 supercharge or turbo THAT

youll get a good weight reduction, better mpg, & the bottom end should take a good deal of boost with no problems when compared to a non-sc 3800 bottom end.

Swapping the heads, intake and PCM won't be enough without retuning the PCM afterwards. The L67's have a lower compression ratio from different pistons to take into account.

A complete L67 swap (with transmission and electronics) is the easiest way to do it.

Clubgp.com there are alot of guys that have done the "TOP SWAP". check with ZZPerformance.com. or just go turbo and you won't need to touch the engine... more power and much easier....

take the L67, but use the NA intake, and drop a turbo on that bitch.

ok so turbo sounds interesting....i assume i would need a turbo (how much do they cost?)...and hardware for it...but what else would need to be done?...i assume computer tuning and maybe more?......thankyou guys for the input on all my questions....bye the way i looked under the car today for the first time...i found out that i need at least 3 things....1. tie rod ends...2. sway bar and bushings....3. the rubber mounts for the cradle as 1 of them has rubber hanging from it LOL....and for the motor i need the intake manifold...and a vacum line...other than that it's complete...i may post some pics soon...and may do a guide on the intake replacement and why they fail.

                    thanx again to all

Just get it running... A turbo means you have to be able to weld and fab stuff, or buy an expensive kit....

i know no one here is gonna like this site, but
3800 performance.com has a turbo kit for an L67 complete with blower block off plate. i think its like 4000 though. kinda pricey if you ask me.

$3099 from 3800performance. but at that price you could buy your own turbo and get your own shit custom made and probably end up with better results

hell you dont even have to run a full top swap you can make your own swap. zzp sells a ssm90 upper intake manifold. buy a m90 off any user on that site your gota do a little trimming to the housing . get a bonneville s/c tensioner puly. a harmonic balanace pully and some injectors. and a 2 bar map. use hp tuners and tune ur pcm in it. . it cost rounghly the same as a top swap . if you contact ed morad from morad parts company in cleveland. <very good guy> he can hook you up with a full top swap around 7-800 bux or so. the ss m90 is a little bit of fab work but works amazing! a stock 4.2 pulley will push about the same power on a n/a motor as a 3.3 pulley on a s/c motor. i persoanlly ran my own ss swap i purchased the parts off other users on the site had about 550 in parts and then i had to buy misc gaskets. i will say tho if you do end up going with a full top swap flow check the heads before you install them theyre known for heat cracking between the valves
