This manifold alone has been a work in progress for at least 6 months, maybe more. It's a front manifold from a 96-97 with the flange milled off so that it can be welded to a new flange in the right position to be used on the rear head. I think I'll be able to mate it directly to my current turbo setup (after swapping for a later style motor of course). Hopefully, I'll find out within another 6 months!

What exactly is the point of doing this. Is the 96 manifold any better?

I want to run a complete 97 engine, not a hybrid of pre 95 and post 96 parts. That way I get the better head design, intake, and exhaust. (My complete 97 motor also came with the complete 97 wiring harness I need for an OBD2 swap.) The stock 96-97 Z34 front manifold does not swap to the rear head like the pre-95 front manifold does to the pre 95 heads. That means that my turbo setup wouldn't have fit and at a minimum I would have to fabricate a completely new rear manifold. This was a compromise to maintain my current crossover and downpipe. It also will hopefully mean greater reliability than a fully custom rear manifold. I do have two new flanges to redo everything just in case though. I'm not sure what the status of this is because I'm out of the country for work. Hopefully I will have it by the next time that I get home so that I can start fitment testing.

            ^ = long version.

short version: he is just in love with those bigger exhaust ports and want to see how well they will spool up his turbo

seriously though, i have wanted to see a 96-97 turbo setup for a while. can u keep me posted? thx.
