  • 93 and earlier allowed to remove catalytic converter ?

edit[scrweed up on topic] should read " 92 and earlier allowed to remove catalytic converter ?"

i hacked sawed out my cat and i brought it to parts source to get some piping and the guy there had informed me that any vehicle 93 and up are required to have a cat by law and removing it can result in a fine(if caught)

    now is this true?
if so is the year correct?

ps: dont hack saw a cat out with one of those mini hacksaws lol

took me forever using one of these

any car ever equipped with a cat must run one by federal law. they started using them in 1975. not to say i adhere to those laws, but it is the law.

yeah, if it came with one, its gotta have one. I dont agree either, but don't ever use a hacksaw, lol. At least upgrade to a sawzall.

Depends IF you have Emission laws in manitoba.

          In Alberta there are none.

Hence, I had removed mine. And YES YOU DO NOTICE A POWER GAIN.

I really didn't think it would make much of a difference but it did.

          IMO

Do they smog the cars in Manitoba???????????

If not, unless you have someone from EPA laying under your car I will tell you that almost every automotive shop there would give a rats ass if had one on or not.

          THATS YOUR CHOICE THOUGH!

i agree hayes, i think its pretty slack here in winnipeg
i have honestly never ran one, although if i had an aftercat o2 id jsut throw on a high flow cat....
and i have allways ran my hooker aero chamber and have never gotten pulled over...
then again im in the habit of just barly letting off the throttle when i pass the police lol, i can get the car VERY quiet

well there are no smog testing here, only the free, "come if you want to test your car days" every once in a while, so im not worried

every province/state is different. here in bc, you are required to have a cat if the car came with one, however only in the lower mainland (not a big area, but has more cars than anywere else in the province) were you have emmissions testing do you get checked. if you dont have one, you fail the test and cant insure your vehicle.

what people do to get around it is either weld cat heat sheilds to a peice of pipe to pass the visual, or being that most of the time you fail without it, have a cat on flanges thats easily removed and replaced with a straight pipe or resonator.

                  heh...

                  emmisions tester: dual exhaust?
me: uhhh, yea thats it dual exhaust...
me: *pulls the lever to switch from his "cat bypass" to emissions exhaust"

here in ohio(8 counties anyway) we have a visual to look for the cat and a sniffer test on rollers @ idle and 35mph. i did that to my truck(heat shields over the exhaust pipe, screws holding them together, no seams) and passed the visual AND the sniffer test. shows you how much a cat really does to reduce emissions...

89 silverado 350 TBI. passed with almost exactly the same #'s as my dad's 90 suburban with same engine, and he had a new catco cat on it(and his engine/sensors/injectors are brand new, mine sat for 6 years).

Here in Chicago for most OBD I vehicles they plop 'em on a dyno and do a drive trace. If you fail you get readouts along the entire curve for HC and CO. Really old cars just get the sniffer at idle IIRC and for the older cars the limits are a joke. The new OBD II they just plug in a scanner and make sure you have a functioning MIL. I'm not sure if they do a visual inspection or not though...
