  • 3400 Timing chain upgraded?

THe older blocks all use a 20/40 tooth setup. In 2000, the 3100 and 3400 both got a 25/50 tooth setup. Is there a reason GM went with more teeth/linkages? Which would be stronger by design? Im looking for the strongest timing chain I can put on a 3400.

Looking at a couple press releases on some other new 660s, higher tooth chains are for NVT issues, not necessarily strength. Since GM has been pushing for improved NVT on these engines over the past several years, I'm betting that is the reasoning. So if you want a quieter chain, go with the higher tooth count.

Forgive my ineptitude, but what is NVT?
Health is merely the slowest rate at which one can die.

that may explain why many 00+ engines see even with 70-80k miles are quieter than my 99 3400 with 90k 85k on it.

I always heard NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness).

Maybe it is NVH... That makes more sense. At least I got 2 out of 3 correct. :P

if you want the strongest timing chain i would reccomend the dual row timing chain. i can't recall the name of the mfg. who makes it but allls i know is that the timing cover must be milled to accomodate the chain.

There is the cloyes (have one new I will sell). It will not work in a roller cam setup tho. Not unless you want to modify the timing cover for a button too...

Tell me more about this double roller timing chain and what needs to be done to make it work. If you have this chain todd and know how to make it work I am interested. I need the best timing setup possible without going to extremes.

I don't think it will work in a gen3 motor is what he is saying.. I think the gen2's can use it, I think Curtis runs a setup like that in his z24..

the cloyes double roller uses the gen 2 cam sprocket design, isnt it different then gen3? the inside cover (at least on a gen2) needs to be milled just over a 1/8" iirc
