  • i need help with a 4.1 v8 85 cadillac sedan trani

so my buddy and i replaced my transmission pan and filter and gasket on my car and he used dexron 3 fluid and the car calls for dexron 2 fluid. could this be a reason that my automatic transmission wont shift out of first gear? if so would a change of fluid do for me?

not at all, either you have a problem with a shift solenoid or she is goin. What was the reason for the tranny service anyway?

I was goin a little fast down a dirt road and i smashed the trani pan onto a rock. many people who i have talked to about this problem have asked me if i ran it dry. I DIDNT run it until it was out of fluid i shut down the car immediately after the crash

Something may have broken then, did you have any metal chunks in the pan at all

Usual faults for no shift out of 1st - 1) TV cable stuck/out of adjustment, 2) govenor - gear stripped or weights damaged. Posible that the "crash" in the pan damaged the TV cable/bellcrank on the valve body. D

no chunks in the pan. D. I have no idea how i would begin to figure out what is wrong. my dad wants me to sell it but its only got 80 thousand miles on it so if i could some how get over this it would still have a good amount of run time. how experienced do i need to be to fix these problems and do you think it is worth keeping and trying to fix or should i try to sell it to someone who knows more what they are doing?

Everything "turboD" is talking about is inside the tranny, if you can tell us what tranny you have someone sould be able to help you. I have rebuilt a couple of 4T60-E's in my day as well as 4L60-E's and plenty of Dodge transmissions so I am pretty familiar with them.

What does it say on the bottom of the pan?

This is front drive right? If so, it more than likely has a 4T60 trans. This is good because it doesn't have any electronics on it. Let me go to work, look through some old manuals and I'll get back to you on this.
