  • Common rust issues for W body chassis?

Just wondering where are the common rust spots that develop on the 1st gen W bodies?

I have only driven my cutlass for the last 4-5 winter season and would like to prevent any rust and prolong the life of the body.

    rocker panels
    above/just behind rear wheels
    rear trailing arm mounts
    hood leading edge
    a pillar bottoms

those are the worst/most common i've seen.

thanks so would buying some rust inhibitor and spraying these areas do anything?

Depending on the condition of your car as it is and if you feel it is worth it.....spend some money and get it completely undercoated ...under the chassis (everywhere) have holes drilled & shoot it inside the rocker panels, pull out the A/C vent flaps in the lower door frames and shoot in back towards the rear wheelwells, into the A pillar areas in front of the doors, shoot it into the doors, up in the out of sight areas in the nose of the hood, in the engine bay (the lower area of the rad support is a location that does rot from salt damage) same with the trunk lid, down in the bottom of the trunkwells. Undercoating goes a long way to keeping away the salt rot. Certainly did wonders for my car when it was being used in winter.

the condition of my cutlass is really mint.
I was thinking of doing it myself with cans of rust check.

drilling holes is a good idea as rust starts to develop from within the panels.
what would you plug the holes with?

The shop that would do the coating would provide the small plugs to seal the drilled holes. Here where I live undercoating costs in the range of between $65 to $95 to do the entire car. At that price it's really worth it to let a shop do it rather than spend what you would need to by purchasing ..how may cans? to do it yourself.
