  • Vacuum diagrams?

This being my first post here, I will at least be on topic (in the off topic section).

First of all; I live in Peru - South America, and therefore I have very limited access to spareparts and physical reading material.

My car is an old Chevy Celebrity 1985 with a carburated 2.8 V6.

The problem which I have not been able to find a solution to, is it's vacuum system. Things have "disappeared" from down under the hood during the past 22 years, and the vacuum lines are most definately not correctly plugged.

Is there anyone here who can guide me to a diagram of the correct vacuum setup for this engine? It runs smoothly and still has a lot of life, but is burning gasoline as if it was paid to do so.

The best performance I have been able to get out of it (highway driving at max 60 mph) was 15.8 miles per gallon... and that is way too much... considering the price down here being $5.45 for a single gallon.

My suspicion is that it's due to the vacuum lines that it is so uneconomic.

Any help would be highly apreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Ok... no diagrams then...

But what about ignition timing for the 2.8L carbed model from 1985? What should the TDC timing be on the ignition?

I have heard everything from 6-12° BTDC, but have not found any reliable info on the subject.

This is something I would be very interested in knowing, also, it is still of interest to know what the vacuum system should look like on my engine.

try this for the vacuum diagram. I really need more specifics on your car to be exact. Lots of diffences. If you can get your VIN CODE, or the ENGINE CODE. This diagram is for the VIN W 1985 2.8 2BC with the engien code of YMH

Both 2.8's for 1985 list the timing as being 10 degrees before top dead center (10 BTDC).

Your engine is a PUSHROD engine, so you might get more help by posting in the PUSHROD sections. A lot of people don't always look in the OFF TOPIC because a lot of BS tends to go on in here.

If you are dealing with the engine, and are not sure where it should be posted (like the vacuum issues), then post in the PUSHRODS GENERAL.

If you need anything else, let me know.

Thanks a lot! I have actually been handed this diagram earlier, but due to the total lack of components (as it seems) present on the diagram, I am still looking for something else.

VIN code and engine code ?

I don't know if those can be read out of the serial number of the car and the engine number?

        Engine number is: FS108380
Serial number of the vehicle: PRU1W19XFS108380

Interesting that it's listed at 10° I tried that setting a couple of weeks ago, but it didn't behave well there at all.... might try it again because since then I have found and fixed yet another vacuum leak.

I'll keep in mind going out of the "off topic" section for technical matters... thanks again for the reply and directions!
