  • Starter issue, anyone?

I'm having some issues getting my car to start, any input would be appreciated. I have a 98 grand am with a 3100. When I go to crank the car the starter turns about a quarter turn and then stops. Here is what I know.

    - Pulled the started and had it spun up, it tested good
    - Battery has 12.6 volts
    - Positive and negative battery cables have clean connections, have voltage
    - Purple wire going to the starter has 12v and test lights good

This leads me to the grey fusible link which turns into a red wire. Does anyone know where this wire leads? Thanks.

did you have your battery tested?

sometimes they go bad, when you put load on them, they dont put out enough amps, and the voltage drops below 10 volts, but show 12+ under no load

Battery voltage at cranking is 10.2. I also used a good battery that cranks another 3100 but to no avail. Also, all the pulleys turn.

Based on the info presented so far, I would have to say the starter is bad.

My STE just did that (3.1 MPFI, but same starter). I would turn the key, and either it would quarter turn, then nothing, or just nothing at all. I just replaced it and all is well with the world.
