  • Rust!

I've got a 94 sunbird with a huge rust problem. I was just going to sell the car but I'm driving more for work now and it gets great mileage so I think I'm going to keep it. Anyway, I want a way to cheaply fix/stop most of the rust on the car. The rust that concerns me is on the bottom of the door and the rocker panels. My plan was to use some rust to primer stuff, maybe a little bit of bondo to fill a couple of holes and then use a spray on bedliner from the middle of the doors down. I don't have the time or motivation to be sanding stuff down to get it looking good. Has anybody used the rust to primer stuff before? Does it actually work good? Any other ideas on how I could fix it cheaply.

its an older j-body, no way to fix it but to completly cut the spots and weld on new sheet metal, get new rockers welded on. ect.ect. thats just how they are, very very hard to find an older j with no rust

i like to use a product called "rust mort". its an acid you spread on the rust and it will stop it completly. you need to knock the loose rust away first, then after about a day you wipe it off, prime and paint it. ive had very good luck with this.

I'll check out those products. All I'm really concerned about is stopping the rust and protecting it in the future.... but without spending too much money. I also have a hole in in the drivers side rocker panel (but on the top). The part that you see when you open the door. Should I bend some metal over it and rivet it down or just fill it up with bondo?

just put a z24 body kit on there, itll be worth it. itll hide the rust. theres really no way to stop the rust once it starts on em..

Nothing you can spray on will stop rust. It'll just eat away at the metal under it. Rust has to be physically removed and the bare metal dried and sealed immediately to stop it.

It cost me $2200 Cdn for a bodyshop to fix the rust on my rear wheelwells and front fenders. Both quaterpanels needed new sheetmetal welded in. The fenders just needed to be sanded and repainted.

I'm not looking for a permanent solution, just something to last a few years. Something that doesn't cost too much but that will help slow the rust down. My situation is that the car will make it through the summer but I'm pretty sure if I take it through another winter it will dissolve . I was just wondering if anybody had done this before and what kinds of results they had, that way I can decide whether I should try to patch it up or just dump it.

I had a ton of rust above the door gfx on my black 93 Z24.. i took the gfx pannel off and ground the door down with the angle grinder.. then sandblasted the rust down to bare metal.. slapped on some rust jelly to eat away anything i missed.. then rustoleum primered it.. bondo'd, sanded the hell out of it and a few coats of primer, 8 coats of black paint with 2000 grit wet sanding between coats, 4 coats of clearcoat, all wet sanded and a good buffing with Aluminium wheel polish.. looks like it did new back in '93
