Try to get the door panel off. It is NOT impossible to do. You might have to pull the seat out to do it. I took a pic of the interior of the door so you can see where to manually press to open the door. Once the door is open, remove the cover for the door handle, and check the adjustment of the rod.
First of all, make sure the door is UNLOCKED. I had a problem where even though it looked unlocked, when I manually did it at the latch, it went moved just a little bit more, and THEN opened. So be 100% sure it is unlocked, THEN hit the release.
The arrow points to the LOCK. The other one is the LATCH.
Play around with those 2 rods and the door should open. You will also be able to determin if it is a LOCK problem, or a LATCH problem.
Just so you know, the pic I posted is from a SEDAN, but the coupe is pretty much identical.Taylor

Thanks Taylor!!!
I will check. One thing I did not mention is that when the inside and outside handles are pulled the interior/dome light comes on. I can get them to turn off by switching the lock from open to close a few times. I am stumped by this condition. Any ideas??

The thing with the interior lights, that is controlled by the HEADLIGHT switch. My 1995 Cutlass Supreme, and my 1996 Grand Prix all do the same. I can't remember if my 1990 Grand Prix STE does it, but seeing that it has the SENTRY LIGHT, then I know it does the EXTERIOR lights automatically.
The door handle (down at the latch) has a switch that works similar to the door pin switches. When you pull on the handle, it is made to illuminate the interior so that you can see inside at night (see if anyone is in your car without unlocking it). The light is on a TIMER, and will shut off on its own in about 16 seconds. This is in the 1994-1996 cars (1995-1997 for the Cutlass Supreme). The headlight switch will also turn off the interior lights if you leave them on after 10 minutes.
If you need wiring diagrams, I have books on the 1989 Cutlass Supreme, 1990 Grand Prix STE, 1993 Cutlass Supreme, and 1996 Grand Prix.Taylor

I will check to make sure that the door is unlocked. Had the door panel off to replace the power mirror last night and I may have not installed everything correctly. If I remove the door lock slider near the handle will this help assure that it is unlocked? I think I might have used the incorrect screw to assemble the door lock bezel. Thanks!!

It might. If it was not installed correctly, the BEZEL might be in the unlocked position, but the door latch still locked. Pull the bezel and see if that helps. Remove it, and then manually unlock it, and see if it opens.Taylor

Well....the slider lock lever was not the problem. I ended up removing the drivers side seat and door panel. Finally did something o release the lock. For somereason I think that the seat belt electricals have something to do with it. I/m not taking any chances - took it to a body shop to give everything the once over because I o not want to pull the seat and panel ever again. Thanks to all.
