  • New to the forum, but not the car

    Hello all, I'm josh.

My story is one I love to tell.
I bought my first z34 when I was 17, after growing up around the 3.1 cars my family has owned, I fell in love with the w-body for reliability.
Then the performance bug found me.
    My first z was a 96 z24 cavalier, after wrecking it I found a mint 93 z34 automatic.
Being young and washing dishes it got expensive to keep it around and after moving to go to college ( for automotive/high performance) I couldnt afford to fix everything it needed. This was in 2006 and I found myself into the 4 cylinder world.....as most kids my age. I traded in my lumina on a 2004 saturn ion redline. Since then I've been a part of the ecotec community, porting heads, and building the supercharged eco's
The redline is now on 25 lbs of boost with a 1.3L tvs blower, ported head, E85....apprx 350hp. Its a great car, and I've met some of my best friends because of it.

Last week I started thinking how much my DD (93 euro 3.1) lacks the fun factor.
I started looking for ltz luminas as a canidate for a top swap s/c.......when I stumbled across the reason I'm here. A 1992 torch red z34 getrag 284!!!! I have only ever seen one in person, and drove 6 hours to do so,but didnt buy that one, nor did I drive it.
anyway after thre CL find I called the seller and 10 minutes later I was on my way to see it. The owner had it for a year and " didnt know much history" Its a 7.5-8 in condition with 116k miles. and typical interior issues that many had...I.e warped dash and whatnot.
it has the bose silver stereo with cassette.
I fell in love and 2 days later bought it.
It runs great......well it does after 4k rpm then seems to really open up, even being a 5 speed its far different from my auto and I know something isnt right.
It stalled a few times today with a no start...starter is going out and I'm also thinking fuel pump
However I noticed a few loose ends when under the hood:
The brake booster hose has an incorrect clamp on it, timing cover has newer looking bolts in it. I'm thinking the timing is off due to lack of low end power. It does have autolite junk wires on it, and owning one before I know its ac delco or nothing.
Shifts good, needs an alignment, and rear bumper is sun faded, but to me its perfect!!!
I am a tech for honda. but with my GM background and The help of these forums I hope to no longer be intimidated by the lq1...I've done the alternator and rear brake problem, and a few wheel bearings.

anyway I will try to post pictures of the z soon, but for now

As long as the trans is good, the car is gonna be fun. Engine is easy to deal with, get a 96-97 intake setup on it and it makes more power up top, plus is easier to work on. I hate the 91-95 intake setup.

I will have to find one, I'm sure there is a thread dedicated to the swap?
I've looked but havent found a definate... is the 284 somewhat "notchy" going into gears? No grinding but I did notice the feel to it.

if it doesn't have the counterweight on the trans for the shifter cables, then probably. The condition of the cables will also make it feel like that.

Not sure about a write up. You need the 96 lower, upper, fuel rail, TB arm, TB. I think thats it. I didn't do it to my car, Josh already had it

                +

LIM bolts, brake booster hose, throttle cable, rear valve cover and vent hose, ICM/coils bracket if you want to move those over by the passenger side strut tower (crank sensor wire will stretch that far), modify the rear spark plug wire sticks since the 96 plenum sticks past where the 95 one does, figure something out for the EGR be it use the stock one to plug the hole and disable it in the ECM and leave it unplugged and gaskets, I think...

I remember ffp offering chips and such a few years back, is this still where you go for perfomance parts, which I'm sure are few, those to stay away from?

Ben (SappySE107) owns WOT-TECH and was actually the one doing the tuning for those chips from FFP. He does offer a few parts for the DOHC too (mostly common ones with the pushrod engines).

What kind of gains can be had?
I'm considering buying some heads to port and polish, since porting has been my bread and butter on the eco platform

I haven't dyno'd mine yet, but since it's 3 runs I was going to do the first on the stock programming, then the last 2 on the tuned chip. Other than that, I've no idea what the gains are, but I do know they are there.

10 hp is what the chip gained on a stock motor. I have a flowsheet of the 91-95 heads stock, and what someone else's port work did. I never flowed my own port work.
