  • Me and my cutlass supreme saying hi to all of you.

    Hi, although I'm new to the forum I have been driving my cutlass since 1988 and it has been very reliable. The 2.8 MFI has just a little bit over 135,000 kilometers and I perform all the repairs and maintenance myself after 1991 when the GM warranty expired. Since new it has never seen winter but in I unfortunately put it through her first winter in 2001. Just before winter I had her rust sprayed as the winters are very harsh on the chassis and exposed components.

    For a 20 year old car that lasted this long I can't complain as it gets me from A to B.

    In 2002 after 14 years the AC did not work but there is refrigerant level is full. It is still R-12.

    It is not modified except for the stainless steel Borla rear muffler, window tints and added fog/driving lights for more light output.

    Parts that I replaced when they failed over 20 years.

    Battery = 4 batteries
    Alternator = 3 times
    Front shocks = 1 time
    Rear shocks = 2 times
    front brakes = 3 times
    rear brakes = 3 times
    Water pump = 2 times
    Wiper motor = 1 time
    crankshaft sensor = 1 time
    MAP = 1 time
    MAF = 2 times
    ignition coil = 5 coils
    ignition module = 1 time
    dog bones = 8 dog bones
    fuel pump relay = 1 time
    oil pressure switch = 1 time
    upper radiator hose = 1 time
    lower radiator hose = 1 time
    transmission hose line to radiator = repaired 2 times
    antenna = 1 time

    Thing that needs attention

    The foot brake is not functioning so I will replace all the cables underneath during the spring. Also the accessory belt tensioner is bouncy and looks like it needs to be replaced as well.

    The Llumar tint is bubbling up after 20 years. I tinted my cutlass back in 1989 and it looks i need to remove the old tint and redo it again in the spring time.

    Car looks great aside for those front lights! It's nice to see that there's people out there who liked these cars when they were new.

    As for the emergency brake, upgrade to the newer 94+ style.

      nice to meet you, its nice to see your 88 holding up so well considering its a classic just about because of the age. Goes to show you how long a W body car will last provided you take good care of it.
