  • 3.4 exhaust question

Ok, so recently I got new exhaust. It consist's of 2.5 piping, Hi-flow cat, Glasspack, and Stainless Magnaflow Straight thrus. Well the thing is when I rev it up high (4K+) it wants to pop alot when it comes back down. So I went to Midas and the guy there just gave me a resonator to put in place of theglasspack that's on there, so here's the question do you think that the resonator will stop it from popping and what will it do to the sound of the exhaust?

My car (Fiero) is using a dynomax resonator in place of a cat and it still pops during deceleration.

Yeah my exhaust with an 18" resonator popped as well, most of the V6 exhaust systems I've heard (Mercury Cougar 3.8 V6, Fiero 2.8 v6, and others) all pop on decel. I think it has to do with the mufflers being of a chambered design (the one's I've heard have all been chambered, except for my friend 280ZX is a dynomax -- not a V6 though)

the popping noise is the engine creating a random misfire in deceleration. you can hear it with stock exhaust but hardly, its just when you put performace exhaust on it you can hear it alot.

I heard it about the same amount on my stock exhaust. Well when I'm coasting it won't pop at all, for some reason. How do I check for a misfire?

Is that popping only something that happens on manual transmission cars?

I think so, or if you put your auto in N right after letting off the gas at high rpms. To tell you the truth, I don't think the 92 pops at all, that or it does it so quietly that I haven't heard it. The exhaust on that car is quieter then stock anyways I think. I don't recall the 91 doing that either, and I still don't have a radio in there to drown out the noise. It just kinda makes that raspy sound, but in reverse, lol.

The popping is a result of having little back pressure. a good resonator will help a bit but whenever you open the exhuast flow up it is going to want to pop on decelaration.

Its just much more likely and easier to get it on a manual, the decel is a good deal more brutal :P

yeah its just the computer creating a random misfire, it is normal. i think its so the rmps will drop faster and not wind the motor out when you give it some juice and let off. the auto 3.4 doesnt do it if you have a stock chip because it only does when you rev it past 3000 rpm in neutral. all gm cars do it, trust me i hear it all day long at the dealership.

My car pops on the deaccel....In gear and dropping in neutral. Kackles or is tingy when cold..

I like the popping sound sounds mean as hell reminds me of old muscle cars.

"overlap" engine timing has alot to do with the way the exhaust responds.
