  • manual rear

here is the deal- 87' 300zx shell

i was going to drop a 231 turbo from a gnx in it BUT i looked into it- bad i dea- why? cause its a bad idea to hook to a manual. the next best motor i thought about IS the 3.4 dohc -

is there a manul tranny out there that is rear wheel drive that will hook to this motor? i don't like the vg series motor from nissan- i know to much about them. i like this motor because its cheap and easy to turbo. but i don't know about a tranny behind it.

    btw are these interferience motors?
You know that sun viser that doesn\'t quite go down when the sun is there and then when you are driving with it down and you can\'t see the stoplights ? Well... that\'s why my fiero isn\'t at the shop yet....

why not just put in a VQ? Its got to be a well beaten path by now. The VG is a good motor, probally better than the LQ1 to be honest. The Buick engine would be cheap to work on, as well as easier to work on.

As far as swapping in an LQ1, just look around at some of the posts in the engien swap section, theres a lot of trans options. S10, Supra, etc.

I would say a f-body trans would be good. Same bolt patern, I dont see why they couldn't hold up against a 3.8t, they have to be better than the fwd transmission we have.
      Something cool coming soon...

      96 LQ1!

so the s10 tranny will work?

is this an interference motor at all? say the timeing belt blew it would not toast the motor like a 4g63 (mitsu).
        -----------------

        to answer your questions;

i don't want the vq- i know too much about them and they are too spendy to build to me. they don't put as much poiwer as the vg and i don't want the vg because the coolant problens. i may as well buy my fiero back for that

as for the 3.8 the on/off switch for the pressure plate rams the crank into the thrust bearing killing it. for those who did do the manual swap in teh gnx world did not like it- and had this problem.

i like the 3.4 dohc motor. i want a stick rwd. i don't want the vg.

so how much hp are the stock dohc motors good for - for boost.

and who makes forged internals? links?

so no one knows if it is a interfierence motor? or what i mean by that?

The LQ1 is not an interference motor. Atleast from 91-95 its not, but as for 96-97 I don't know.

Also remember that at high rpms, even though its not a interference motor, you could still get piston to valve contact if the belt broke. Just change the belt and tensioner every 60K miles and you should be fine. The 3.4DOHC is a great engine when its turned the right way and you can get to the alternator.

Me personally I would do a SR20DET, A RB25DET or LS1 instead of the 3.4DOHC, but thats just me.
            1995 Pontiac GTP
Over $12K invested, and still its slow. Maybe thats because thats most all repairs. Don\'t knock the engine though, because thats the only part that has seemed to last.

Great - well i am ethier going to use this or the 4.6 dohc from ford.

does anyone make foged internals for these motors (the 3.4)- if so who-links?

and what are the stock internals on the 3.4 good for in hp?

it looks like i am going to have to get rods and LOWER compression pistons for the ford. the ford is good to 400hp stock. with new rods and pistons good to 1k in hp.
