sounds like lifters but doenst really fit...

When I start my z34(93 lumina) lil bit of chatter sounds like a fan almost then stops right away when smoke comes out the tail pipe. the smoke stops with in 5 sec. i find though if I take the rpms above 4ish the noise starts agian or is I am quick on the gas. it really does sound like a lifter but from lifter problems I have had in the past they sound the worst when it is cold not when it warms up and I play wiht the gas. any thoughts would be great.
