  • HELP abs light on after new battery install

I have a 92 lumina z34 and I recently installed a new battery, and now the ABS light is on. I checked the ABS fuses in the glove box, and the 60A, the 5A and the Relay under the hood on the driver side. All seem to be intact. What else could be causing the light to be tripped. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

I doubt it has anything to do with the fact that you put a new battery in it. Is the light on steady or blinking??

I'm sure that isn't the cause of the abs light , but it wasn't on before I put the new battery in. The instant i turned on the ignition after putting the new battery in, it came on and stays on steady all the time when the ignition is on.

ABS systems in the early years are vary touchy. Yours has disabled itself, you may need a new anti lock brake control module, in some sparse cases just changing the battery can cause this to fail..Was the key in the on position when you hooked the battery up?? Did you disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last??

But first, check rear sensors and clean the connectors, there should be ABS sensors on the front as well. If that does make the abs reset, then go back and put electrolytic grease on the connector receptical pins. If it does not reset the abs then you may have a bad controller.

A steady ABS light mean it is fully disabled, blinking ABS ligh usually means a bad sensor or dirty connections and it disables sensor inputs at that wheel if more than one it disables the whole system. Either way the brakes still function normally, and meet federal and state standards. In 1991-93 ABS was not standard and was not conformal to regulations.

In fact having ABS is not required in 91-93, and when reselling it does not have to be repaired if faulty. If it was standard equipment then yes it would be a required repair. Try and explain that to a car dealer lol.

No, when i changed the battery, the key was in the ignition, but in the off position. The abs light had flashed intermittantly 3 or 4 times over the course of the past couple years. I have never had any problems such as this before. I will try what you suggested and get back to you. Thanks

what was the reason you changed the battery? I only ask, because usually when the alternator starts to fail, the ABS system is the first to get affected by it.

I changed the battery because something in the driver door was damaged when the police were trying to open it, and if the door is not locked properly or if someone pulls the handle while the door is locked, the light around the keyhole will stay on and kill the battery. This happened many, many irritating times and the battery just couldn't take it anymore. The alternator went a couple years ago and I didn't have any problems with the ABS.

alt noise can effect anything that depends on the VSS and wheel sensors. I also have bad alts out of the box and alt fail after 2 years under normal use. You may also not be able to hear the noise, but other electronics can respond negativly to low frequency RF.

                        ABS LIGHT

I had this problem before and it is caused by low voltage going to the ABS system.
First thing to do is to remove and clean (with a wire brush, sandpaper etc.) your remote boosting terminal, especially the lead & lower part of the post, where the two are bolted down. If possible a thin coat of di-electric grease after the areas are cleaned. Tighten and check light.
To be on the safe side I would also clean and apply some di-electric, to the pos/neg battery posts. (THIS COULD BE YOUR PROBLEM)
Its one or the other in your case, since you replaced the battery. IT could be as simple as a cleaning and a re-connect.
                        Good Luck !

Just a thought, but a couple months or so ago I had a turn sig switch go on me. The symptons leading to this was I had a battery go in say October. Then a cop insisted I had a brake light out at least twice. About that time the ABS light would come on maybe stay on or go out all together. The criuse would quit when you signaled right. Could be related. Maybe not. Good luck and keep asking questions. You will figure it out.
