  • Oil

The original owner of my car was runnign 10w40 and I put it 5w30 like it says. My question is should I switch back to 10w40 b/c my car seems to slowly burn the 5w30 at least the fully synthetic. Or should I just swith to a partially syn 5w30

How many miles on the motor ? Also running full synthetic does not give you any advantage unless you get it to the proper operating temp and drive it like that for long periods. With our cars running a thicker oil is kinda risky because of the design of oil galleries. Stick to conventional oil and stay with the 10w/40. shouldn't harm it at all. In winter though I would run 5w30. Try to stay away from all those oil aditives, they usually do not work... I have found one that sort of worked for a little while, but doesn't seem worth it.
    Hope that helps

Synthetic oil acts like a detergent, and cleans your engine. What I'm getting at is that it might have unclogged a potential oil leak that your engine might have had and might be leaking (not burning) oil.. just a thought.

        92 w/90k miles
The reason I started on fully syn was because it got rid of my valve tick on my 93.
The only reason why I don't think it's a leak is b/c I havn't seen a drop, although that doesn't mean its not leaking, but ususally I see something.

Run regular 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer. With 90k it is pretty late to be running synthetic and it could cause oil consumption/leaks.

            Good Filter

Yes Synthetic right now wouldn't do much good. Yes run 5w30 in winter and 10w30 or 10w40 in summer. Also I have been reading but have not tried yet, is to get a really good oil filter.. Like AC Delco Duragaurd is supposed to be good, and supposed to reduce the nasty ticking sounds of these motors.

            Ciao

The additives last longer and protect better in fully synthetic thats why i prefer it. Although I have heard not to run fully syn when you are breaking in a new engine. Something like it's too slippery.

I've read that if a NEW engine has already started out with synthetic, then its ok. But if you get a new car with regular oil and switch to syn its no good. I tried castrol syntec once in my GP (at around 160,000miles) and switched back to regular oil (oooooh, you aren't suppose to do that!! ). IF anything I might have noticed the oil pressure guage was a bit higher after longer period of time, but it wasn't worth the money. Possibly on my next car.

http://amsoil.com has a huge thing to read on synthetic oil

I don't doubt that. I'm refering a to brand new built motor never been started.
