  • Hesitation problem

Ok, here is the problem. Every time I start the car cold, I start driving it and up til about 1/10th pedal the car has a slight hesitation. It seems to go away after the car warms up though. I just got done changing the timing belt and I am 99% sure I got the timing correct on it. Also I pulled the thermostat out because of heat issues with the car. I have not put a new one in yet because I can't afford one at the moment. Would either of these things have anything to do with the hesitation, or is this normal for the engine when it is cold? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this problem.

Pulling the t-stat out can cause heating issues as well. (at least here in the desert of Phoenix Arizona. Then again a bubble gum wrapper sucking to your rad can cause overheating in the summer. lol) What year of car do you have? What temp is your car running at now, with no t-stat?

Thanks for the reply. I have a 95 GTP and it used to run a straight 220 with peaks around 240. Now that I removed the thermostat it runs about 120 max when driving. It will still kick in the fans at an idle if you leave it sit for a while though. You think the thermostat being pulled would cause the hesitation?

120 is way to cold. Needs to be at least 160. !80 is optimal operating temp. Yes it can effect drivability and fuel mileage. Along with accelerated piston and cylinder wear.

Get a stat in there. Also, do you have the screen in your MAF still?

I will try and get a stat in asap. Yes I still have the screen in my MAF. Really this hesitation and the grinding noise in my transmission are the only problems I have with this car at the moment. Well, that and I just hit a deer last Sunday... But the car took the hit suprisingly well considering I hit it at about 50 MPH. Thanks again for the help.

Well, I hit him, he flipped upside down rolled up my hood and right over the roof. I hit him on the drivers side corner of the car and he took out the headlights, pushed in the fiberglass around the lights, and kinked in my hood about 2-3 inches. I will probably be able to get it to look acceptable this weekend (lets hope so anyway)

Got a stat in the car but it does not help the hesitation at all. Something odd I noticed though, when I keep all the electronics off in the car for some reason it does not hesitate quite as bad. In fact it seems to improve quite a bit. Is there any chance my alternator could be creating the hesitation? Also I did not replace the gasket on the EGR when I changed the timing belt, could this also be part or maybe all of the problem? Considering the hesitation goes away after temp guage starts moving is it possible that I could have messed up the timing? I would think the hesitation would be constant if the timing was off and the car drives perfect after the temp guage goes up. Thanks for the help.
