Hi, I have a 1993 cutlass supreme with the 3.4l dohc motor in it. Does anybody know where the knock sensor is on it? The service manual has never helped me with this car at all. Thanks.

It is on the back of the engine in about the middle of the block. If you have an auto you would probably be able to get at it from behind the alt. If you have a manual it's easy street from under the car.

It threads into a blind hole in the block, so you can unscrew it without losing any coolant. The new one installs with a specified torque, and being accurate there is important.^ some people may call this guy an asshole at times, but he isn't wrong very often -- Robert

You can go either route, but removing the alternator will make it easier to access.
Heed schurkeys warning on the torque spec. Too tight and the new sensor will be too sensitive, too loose and it won't be sensitive enough.

I can't help you on the accessibility issue, I played with the knock sensor AFTER removing the rear head due to failed head gasket. Alternator, block heater, and knock sensor were therefore EXTREMELY easy to access.^ some people may call this guy an asshole at times, but he isn't wrong very often -- Robert

My first guess would say no. I would look at normal maintenance items like plugs and wires first off, especially the wires given wet weather effects.
