  • best way to remove coils?

I've heard it's a PITA to replace the coils in these cars, since they're below the exhaust manifold. Is there an easy way to go about this, or is it going to be a bitch any way I do it? And what tools do I need? I just bought jack stands and a good LED flash light. I have a 201 piece mechanics tool set I got from my brother for Christmas, so hopefully I don't need much else. Thanks in advance!

not to bad... the Ignition module is actually a biotch to get out... remove the plug wires and label them. then with the car on jack stands come from under neet the car and you should be able to get them with a 1/4" drive wrench maybe a swivel and i don't remember the bolt size holding them on but its small like 7mm or 8mm.. its not to bad... you should be able to get them from the top to but its hard to see anything and you have to reach under the exhaust so ive allways done it from the bottom.

lol the 1st time i actually took off the front exhaust manifold (3 bolts and 6 studs, and pry back on the X-over) then its wide open form the top (thats the long way but its pretty easy, you don't have to lay on the ground)

That and I've heard wrapping electrical tape around the extension or nut driver, whichever you use, works wonders for pulling stuff close to the starter without the chance of grounding the positive terminal possibly making a nice warm engine bay fire to roast marshmallows on.

Also takes 2 seconds to disconnect the battery ground

                FWIW,
On my '95 Monte Carlo 3.4 Liter, first the left coil pak went bad. The coil pak housing was cracked. Then a couple months later the middle pak went bad,
another cracked housing. Three months later the first coil pak I put in was not firing, turned out to be the ignition module(?), which is the base that all
the coil paks are mounted on. I said hell with it and replaced the third original coil pak and also the ignition module.
                No problems since last summer.
My Son got the "experience" of doing all the work (Dad with a beer in one hand and helping from above when possible).
He did it from below with the car on jackstands. I think that's the easiest way to do it.
