the manual says at most 6 quarts of dexron II or any revision of it after that. i believe they are up to dexron 6 now, which is argueably better, so whatever you can afford, put it in and keep the tranny happy.

oil: 5 quarts minimum, that's without adding in the capacity of the filter. and don't cheap out and get a damn FRAM, that's just asking for trouble. i would grab a ACDelco PF52(after looking at the inside of it to make sure it isn't an E-core model) or the equivalent WIX filter. oil weight is listed for 5w-30 to 10w-30 depending on your expected temperatures. if you expect the temps to hit 0*F or lower while on this oil change, use 5w-30

If you want some better pop, change to a Ford fluid. Clutches grab faster. Mercon works best in GM cars. Problem is, you have to change it about 3 times to flush the GM fluid out. I suggest getting a tranny drain kit for the pan. It is old school tried and trusted.

      Just throwing it out there.

I thought Mercon was Ford's trade name for a Dexron-equivalent product; Ford didn't want to pay royalties to GM for the Dexron trade name. Dexron/Mercon should be the same stuff.

Using Type F fluid in a Dexron-spec transmission is common as dirt.

Do keep in mind that Type F doesn't take heat as well as Dexron; and it doesn't lubricate as well, either.

Not my first choice. But what do I know?

Easy enough to flush the trans via the cooler tubes. No need to drop the pan three times.

Type F doesn't have the friction modifiers found in Dexron, so it's not as "slippery" and therefore tends to shift harder, however it won't last as long.

It can also cause problems with lock up converters at times.

Not sure I'd use it in a DD but for a performance application it's fine.

I still like my Royal Purple.

Don't use Type F. You will wear out parts in the transmission eventually. If you want to mess with different combos, try 20% caterpillar 30w transmission fluid mixed with the Dexron. It's thicker and will stick to parts more such as the diff (might help some in the event of one wheel burn out which will kill these transmissions) and firms up the shifts probably due to being not as thin so it doesn't leak past parts as bad.
