  • power steering pump question

My 1995 Cutlass Supreme has the EVO power steering pump (Variable assist). It is making noise like it is going bad. My SPARE power steering pump is a NON EVO pump. Can the pressure sensor be swapped onto the non EVO pump?

    The pump in question:

No, the pressure sensor mounting area is totally different on the two pumps, and is cast into the body. For instance, on a non VA pump, the outlet fitting is pretty much verticle.

FWIW, I was able to use my old 3100 P/S pump on the 3.4 DOHC motor just by swapping out the reservoir from my old one. The old 3.4 pump was totally worn out....and screeched liked a banshee!

The wiring harness I have has the connector for the VA pump, and I don't have it connected.....and so far so good.....

all 3100's came prewired for the EVO pump, but I have never seen a 3100 W-body with it. My car DOES have the EVO stuff and it does work. When I disconnect it, the steering gets really jerky when I am going down the road.

The 3100 pumps with the EVO are pretty rare (the only car I have ever seen with it was a Cutlass Ciera). I just have a spare non EVO pump so was thinking about using it, but since I have the EVO line, and the EVO rack, I can't just hook it up like it is

I was looking at my NON-EVO pump today, and the fitting where the pressure line is attached looks to be removeable. I was looking on rockauto, and it listed an EVO pump without the pressure sensor. If the pressure sensor is removable, then maybe it can be done.

Never mind. The pumps with the EVO are cheaper than I thought. I can get a reman one for under $90. I will just get a new pump. There is no guarentee that my spare pump is any good to begin with.
