  • Timing Belt Conflict...?

OK, first....yes, I have read the "how to time the engine" post, but there seems to be a conflict between that and what my factory manual says. To summarize:

loosen bolts on cam cogs, place holder tool across both front and rear cam flats. Turn engine to TDC (mark on cover) and then.... HERE IS THE CONFLICT

The manual says to tighten all four cams at this time

The write-up says tighten the front, rotate engine one turn back to TDC and tighten back cams.

    Which is it?

This is for a 96 engine......

    Thanks!

Holy crap! It worked.....kind of. I timed it according to my 95 Helms manual, and yes.....it said time both at the same time. Well, that's what I did.....and it ran, but like crap (see my other post).

Soooo...I didn't trust Ben to begin with, and now I am paying the price. I have to retime her. Just to verify, I pulled out my later version of the 95 Helms, and lo and behold...yup, site it correct. I need to clamp it down, spin it the 360, and clamp the other bank down.

Damn! I spent all that time making sure it was spot on while it was on the stand.....and now this. Sigh.....

I'm kind of shocked it even ran, if half the damn cylinders were not even timed correctly. Wow!

Thanks as ALWAYS Ben, and I will NEVER, I mean NEVER doubt you again

it runs like a twin 3 cylinder, with both banks firing at the same time. It is kinda strange how it runs. If you took it out for a drive, you would notice it gets better as RPM goes up. haha, such a silly setup:P Sucks you gotta do it again. Its sad the maker of the engine didn't have it setup proper for their own tech manuals.

It runs like a big three cylinder turd then I dunno, maybe the timing was off somehow else, as it was missing a lot, pumping raw fuel out the exhaust, and setting TONS of misfire codes. It wouldn't rev much either.....

Sigh.....retime per the V6 60 specs coming this weekend

I was really tired when I went to Ben's one night after a long day at work. I forgot what he was doing, but I was working on my timing belt. I ended up spacing out, having a brain fart, and did both banks at the same time. It does run very, very odd, but will run. I tell you what, that IS the torqueyist (sp?) I have ever felt the 91, lol. As for top end, it wasn't as good as it was when timed right. It did sound really strange too.

                3.4 timing procedure?

I've have combed the net and wondered into this site. I am doing the timing on my sons 94 Z34. I made a tool for the flats. I was going to do them both at the same time, but from what I'm seeing here, thats not right? Do you have a step-by-step if the book isn't right? Also do I need to loosen the cam gears with the belts on and time it?

Definately go by what this site says....

You need to loosen the pulleys on the cams (they "pop" a little when they loosen), but keep the belt on. With the tool on the flats, and the timing mark on the front cover and balancer lined up....tighten down the rear cam sprockets. Take off the rear flat tool. Rotate the crank 360 until the marks line up again, and tighten down the front cam sprockets. Remove tool and you should be good to go....

My preliminary Helms manuals (1995) were wrong....it said to do all cam sprockets at the same time. The later final Helms manual (still 1995) had it right.....just like Ben listed earlier

Super! I was about to make a grand error. I even went to the GM guys but they were all newbies and had no idea. I will put the belt back on and start fresh.
