  • DOHC running warm...Then DOHC running cool...Then.

...it runs warm again. and the cycle repeats.

Not hot, mind you, just halfway up the gauge then the needle goes down to almost 150.

I have flushed the entire cooling system, replaced freeze plugs, water pump, thermostat, the radiator was replaced not long before I bought it and all the air is out of the cooling system, open the bleeders and they just pee green coolant.

    This is a 1994 DOHC.

I took it out this evening for a drive up into the hill country, past Sandra Bullock's house and a few others. The temp gauge swung back and forth but generally staying within 190F. No matter if it's sitting or moving, the needle will go to the halfway mark, stay there for a few seconds and slowly move down past the first hash mark and back to 190.

I do smell coolant just once in awhile at a stop but not often. Both fans work and come on when they are supposed to. No loss of coolant at all and no milk shakes in the oil pan.

Could it be another bad thermostat? That was a bugger to replace...

Throw me ideas, oh DOHC Gods.

Did you block off the throttle body coolant line?

No, still hooked up. I did that to my old 3.1, but not this one.

the temp fluctuation is normal with stock programing... the fans wont kick on until 212 for fan one and 226 for fan two. remember the stock thermostat is at 195 so these fan temps are fine for stock Tstat... but now you can see why they recomend changing fan temps when dropping to a 180 stat.

i have my fan temps set atou 188 turn on... mainly cause i dont want my trany to pick up heat from the coolent... so i need to keep it below 190

            Same thing at 65 Lorenzo.

Today it went almost to the first red mark and stayed there for about 2 minutes before returning to 190...I had the A/C on and both fans were going.

            I'm gettin aggravated.

My DOHC is being a D*CK...LOL!

Mine has been leaking coolant recently, and I filled it back up and drove to college. My temp gauge fluctuates between half and cold just like you say yours does. I'm just assuming it had to 'burp' to get air out of the system. It would slowly work its way up to midway between hot and cold, and then drop quickly down to normal again. Maybe you need to get air out of your system from the water pump and all that work you did?

Is there something I'm missing in bleeding the coolant?

Well, if you're comfortable in driving it, you could always just act like you never bled it in the first place and try it again. If the car is running fine and its not overheating, then there shouldn't be any harm in it. I know I was driving through town and it would climb, and at least for me, I could kick it in neutral and bring the rpms to 2500 or 3000, or if you had the opportunity, just get on it a little, and my temps would drop back down. My .02 cents.

Even if you didnt bleed it right the first time you let it sit for a few hours the system would've equaled out. any white smoke ou the back?

No smoke what so ever and no sweet smell. Compression is good too.

When I let it idle, it will sit at 190* all day long...It's when I am driving it that it will heat up, even when it hits the first red mark, the heat will stay hot. I'm not getting anything out of the bleeder by the MC when it's warm either...

                      I'm gettin even more aggravated.

It ran fine for the girls....Maybe I need to start wearing a short skirt more often to drive my car. lol

I'm not convinced of that...The radiator was replaced less than a year ago and is quite clean inside.

Well the Gauge temp sensor could be doing something funky, by any chance do you have access to a temp probe?

I'm hoping that an incorrect radiator cap fixes it...It had a 13 lb. cap instead of the correct 16 lb. cap.

I guess I'll find out when I go meet Taylor this weekend.
