  • 3.4L DOHC Not Getting SPark

Ok, well I've decided I'm going to attempt to get the DOHC engine in my parts car running. I'm still debating on what I want to do with it, and whether I'm going to rebuild it and stick it in my car or sell it or something.

Anyway, this is going by what the previous owner told me, but apparently the engine isn't getting a spark at all, and I was wondering where I should start looking (aside from the fact that I'll need to find a battery) because I have no idea where to start.

What kind of potential do these engines have anyway? I know it has more horsepower than the 3100 off the bat (but worse fuel mileage), but I haven't looked into it much otherwise.

Figured I'd toss an image in as she sits now:

is the car crashed at all?? if it is the air bag sensors can cause the engine not to get spark...

No, it was in a few minor accidents, nothing major otherwise. It was running before I got it apparently, it died on the previous owner on the highway.

First you gotta check for any voltage at the plug wire at all. If you have none, I'd check the crank position sensor. Then ICM references that to know when to fire the plugs. If that isn't it, it's probably the ICM. If it died on the highway I would bet on one of those two things.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

Ok, I'll start with those and see where it takes me. The ICM, is that part of the coil pack or separate?

it is where the coil packs mount too.

personally i would start there first... cause it is easyer then dealing with the crank sensor. from what i hear autozone or napa can test our ICM's napa's test equipment is said to be better then autozone though...

aside from the Oil pump drive shaft Oring leak these motors have, and the bad position of the alt. they are great motors.

I don't know if I have an autozone anywhere near me, I know there is a few Napa's though. Can this test equipment be rented out? I ask because there is no way that I can move the car, its about 15 minutes outside my city at my sisters place and would require and trailer to move (it also has the steering column half out).

Hopefully it is just the ICM, make my life easy, but we shall see. If it does run and is fixable, it will just be a debate on whether to keep it for my car and swap it in or to sell it and upgrade the 3100.

you remove the ICM and take it to napa... no need to have the car there.

Alright awesome, I'll take it of in the next few weeks and have it tested.
