  • 284 5-speed oil leak

Looks like it's coming from the driver's side diff where the halfshaft attaches to the stub axle. Is that a seal that can be replaced with a 282 part? Also, do the output shaft support bearings for the 282 work on 284's?

Same thing. Point is it's leaking fluid, doesn't matter what kind.

gm part number is 14092900 (discontinued)

you can order some and wait or call up a parts store and see if they can interchange them. i think theres an a/m pn in one of the recent trans section threads. i found some seals from another tranny that worked, but im not sure what they were. they actually were a little tighter than the gm ones. i think they were actually from like a 60.

edit: found the post but there was no number in it.

Using that I found AC Delco part number 24202835 Drive Shaft Seal which says it's for the 3- and 4-speed automatics, though it is also listed under Manual Transmission. If it's the same part number that'd be great, as it seems to be pretty commonly available. There's also a Timken part number 3543 listed as an Output Shaft Seal.

The part number you need to get from the dealer should say that's its discontinued from GM but that you can get them from VPI. I had to get two of them earlier this year, they have about 430 left.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

Last time I called VPI they wanted $500 for a $50 part!! They're not my friends anymore.

Even if the output shaft support bearings work on the 284, I wouldn't use them. The surface they ride on is NOT hardened. The axle surface gets galled.
