  • what happened to the DOHC PROBLEMS thread ?

I was following the DOHC PROBLEMS thread and suddenly it was locked.

the last post was this by a mod named "Sappy":

"Bosch plus 4s are horrible with the gm igntion system. I don't care if its WW2 technology. Many people have had issues using them on their 60V6. I tried a set of bosch plugs and they didn't last 10k miles (electrode was almost gone by then).

btw, this thread is from 04 so hopefully lyle doesn't need the help anymore"

WTF is going on ? those 4-tip plugs are what GM uses now in all their cars, as "lifetime plugs"- military aircraft use them because they are the most reliable spark plug ever made, for flying long distances 1000's of miles over ocean and mountain ranges- because up there, if a plug fouls, you fall 5 miles to your death- you can't just pull over to the side of the road ! the more electrodes a plug has, the least chance there is to foul one- if one gets fouled there are the other 3 to keep right on sparking- I've tried these plugs and they are the best IMHO

if you're electrode was gone from using them, you had other problems, i.e. lean condition or engine detonation that created excessive heat and burned the electrode off- this was most likely caused by putting a non-stock ECM prom chip and program in, as the most likely culprit- I have run those plugs for years with no problems, and when I remove them after 50,000 miles, they can be put back in and still run more, here's a pic of my last set with 50K on them- and yes, they are out of my 3.4 DOHC engine

if you are burning electrodes off spark plugs, you're doing something else wrong

Bosch makes terrible spark plugs! I would not let Bosch spark plugs even near my car.

It seems to me you were trying to tell Lyle what to do, but why would he want help after 3 years? He better have found out the answer after 3 years.

The Bosch plugs don't work in GM cars because of the DIS ignition or "waste spark" system. When you have a cylinder on the combustion stroke, the coil fires so the plug will spark. But, it also fires the other plug that's connected to it at the same time, and that cylinder is on the intake stroke, so the plugs get fired twice as often as a normal car's plug would, and the Bosch's can't handle it because they use a thin metal electrode and they can't cool down fast enough between sparks. If you were running platinum +4s in your DOHC and they still worked as good and looked as good as you say, I'd say your ignition system may not be producing as much voltage as it should. I ran Platinum +4s in my car once, and they worked great for about 10K, and after that they performed like ordinary worn out plugs.
I may own a GTO now, but I'm still a 60V6er at heart.

People come into my work all the time complaning about bosch plugs they had one time and refuse to buy them again. We sell autolite the most, not far behind are the Acdelcos and the NGK plugs. We sell alot of champion plugs but most of the are for small engines. I only sell some one Bosch plugs if they request it.

Amazing how Smokey's IP is in the same location as the other 2 problem users we've had... And its funny how they all seem to agree with each other!! Must be something in the water up there.

IP ban may be happening very soon....

Some people just like to stir up shit.......must lead a boring existence.

Add me to the list of people whose GM engine will NEVER go near Bosch plugs.
