  • Caution: do not sandblast cam cogs

FYI... do not sandblast cam cogs to clean them, only use a wire brush.

I blasted mine (whole cog to clean) and powdercoated just the sides to pretty them up. Since my buddy was kind enough to trash the motor after he bought it, I was able to pull and inspect the belt and pulleys.

Roughing up the belt surface of the cogs pretty much turns them into sandpaper.. and we all know what sandpaper does to rubber. Im suprised the belt lasted as long as it did.. I have never seen so much belt material caked inside that cover until now.

So, just a word to the wise, dont be an idiot like me.

    Sounds like something I'd do.

Yeah, for real. I'd never have thought that. I mean, it makes sense, but you wouldn't think it right away.

I use cam cogs as something to set the heads on while I port them. Also used them in the blast cabinet. 91-93 cam cogs are worth about that much:P

How about glass bead blasting? Ive seen belts shredded like made but the cogs didn't seem to be any different than stock.

Has anybody tried dry ice blasting? I use it in fire cleanup (do a lot of building insurance restorations), it's some pretty cool stuff to work with. It can be used anywhere and there is no cleanup.

Sorry I'm not a DOHC guy, but thought this was interesting.

EDIT: It doesn't even damage drywall, so I'm sure it is safe for any kind of metals.
