Starter trouble

Sorry for dumping my problems on you guys. Anyway, my starter was fucked, would barely crank over. Changed it and it started like a dream. But a few starts later it would not always engage, you could hear the selenoid engage but it wouldn't crank. It would take a few tries before it would start. Some times 10-20 tries, hot or cold didn't matter. Rechecked connections, didn't help.

Got a new starter, same shit again. Could it be my ignition? Or maybe my Viper car starter has something to do with it? I don't know.

It's fucking embarassing though. Piss me off.

If you diaged it preperly...Could be just consecutively bad rebuilds. Unfortuntely that happens way too often....Just for hahas I'd try a working factory starter from the junkyard.

If you jumper the solenoid to +, does it start then? If so, the problem's in your ignition circuitry.....

I'll check that out, I hope it's not the ignition. I like to yell at shitty auto parts store clerks, for having such junk parts.

I had changed my power wire when I put the battery in the trunk and it screwed me in terms of starter reliability. I had used a starter wire that used a screw in type for the wire....and that was a big piece of metal. This created a ton of resistance in the power wire and made the starter act like it wasn't engaging properly. I tried shims and that did nothing. I still need to swap out the grounds to non corroded ones and it should be mint again

So, check your wires and grounds for corrosion or perhaps a big solid peice of metal used as a connector to the battery.

I'm running a new 4 guage wire to it soon and 2 guage to my alternator. But the thing is, my old alternator nerver did this, and the connections were definatily worse.

I the 91 used to do that too. It got bad enough where I had to get out and use a tire iron to commence beating the shit out of the starter to get it to work. After each "beating" the car would start like a champ on the first try. That was my temporary fix till I got the new starter. The new starter started doing the same thing later down the road, then when we slapped in the 5 speed, I used the starter from the parts car (original Delco starter to the GTP as far as I could tell) and it still works fine every time to this day.
