  • 3.4 Litre Rebuild Tips

    I don't know if everyone would catch these factory manual mistakes, but I figure it's best to share them and find out for sure if I'm right.

    1.) On Page 6A9-33, it shows the front exhaust bolts should be tightened to
    18 INCH/LBS. (that's practically tightened by hand!)
    On page 6A9-71, the specs show the exhaust manifold nuts should be
    tightened to 18 FOOT/LBS.
    * We used 18 FOOT/LBS.
    The rears got tightened to 115 INCH/LBS per the book before we got to
    the front exhaust manifold.(Don't know if that's right as it is only a little
    over 9 FOOT/LBS.)

    2.) On page 6A9-43, it shows the oil level indicator tube assembly bolt to be
    tightened to 89 INCH/LBS.
    On page 6A9-72, the specs show the oil level tube bolt to be tightened
    to 89 FOOT/LBS. (It's only a small bolt with an 8MM head!)
    * We used 89 INCH/LBS.

    3.) The factory manual wants the use of a torque angle meter to turn the
    head bolts 90* past initial torque.
    * Not having this tool, I had my Son hold a speed square above my torque
    wrench, with one side lined up with my torque wrench. I then turned the
    torque wrench until it lined up with the other side of the speed square
    (90*). This worked out well as you have to start at different angles
    according to which head bolt you're doing and the obstructions around
    that the torque wrench handle hits.

    Hope this helps someone,
    And if I'm wrong anywhere, please let me know,

    When I do the head bolts, I get my wratchet lined up parallel with the radiator, then pull it till it points strait, but the speed square idea is slick
