  • Alero Engine Swap: Round 2-More Power!

    Hello again,

    So just today I noticed it's been over a year since I last updated my post of the 57k Mile LX9 Alero, I should conclude that considering the car has been finished (well, of sorts) nearly a year now.

    But now I'm back on here because I'm about to indulge in another Alero project. This time in the chassis I've always wanted-a GLS coupe! However, this sample is not as clean as what I'm in now. More miles (134k) and some body damage. I looked at it for the body repairs, knowing it was a V6 coupe w/leather and 16's. Upon being handed the keys, I heard a loud clatter from what sounds like top-end, rear bank internal engine noise. Could be lifters considering a local shop threw heads on it recently, but I've been here before--look at my other post.

    So now it's a major project. Rehab the body with new paint, clean the f*** out of the interior, and do another power plant swap! This time, it's gotta be bigger, faster, stronger. I was interested in an LZ9/MH2 (GTP G6 3.9/6 spd) drop in last time, but was turned off by the explanations from Milzy for the mounting setup for VVT engines. I've considered this again because of some simple logic. If the LX9 fit in the "Z" Malibu and the Alero, and they have similar mounts above the front cover, why wont the LZ9 that fits in the Malibu, fit in the Alero?

    I know there are hurdles with the management systems cooperating, with TBW and 58x timing and whatnot, but does anyone have any progress with these swaps, more importantly, with the 6 speed transaxle? I can fabricate mounts I feel, but am mostly concerned with axles and electronics. I know the G6 is an Epsilon chassis, but after looking at them here @ the body shop, they have alloy front lower control arms, and knuckles that resemble the N-body's. If axles are different, I'm curious if I can fit Epsilon knuckles to house the hub that fits to the axle. Or if Epsilon hubs fit in "N" knuckles? Only one way to find out...

    Here's the second N Body race car. The other side has the dent in the quarter-that side's ugly. I think I'm set on a LZ9/MH2 swap. $800 for 40k mile examples of each through my vendors. I like the idea of VVT, as a whole in the automotive industry, but not so sure I want it in my car. I'm sure there's info on this but just haven't had the time to really look. Does anyone offer conversion parts, or what parts do I need to swap to make it work. I know there's threads explaining the use of the 3.4's PCM, but I doubt that's possible w/ the 6 speed tranny.
